I want to change my name (renam) my name. Can I change it? How do I proceed with the procedure?

Notification and certification (family register, resident certificate, etc.)

In order to change your name, you need to file a petition with the "family court" and take steps to obtain permission to change it.

You will be able to change your name only if the "family court" determines that there is a legitimate reason.

After obtaining permission to change your name at the "family court", please notify the ward office Family Registry Division Family Registry Section with a copy of determination of family court.
In the case of change of Mr. (last name), Mr. (last name) will be changed by another notification.
In this case, permission from the family court may be required.

Procedures for filing a petition with a family court

Please refer to the "Family Court" for details of the application procedure.

About the notification destination of the name change notification

This is the "Ward Office Family Registry Division Family Registry Section" in the applicant (the person whose name is changed, legal representative if you are under 15 years old) or the ward where permanent domicile is located (or either). (It cannot be handled at the Administrative Service Corner and City Hall.)

What to bring to the name change notification

One change notice for one person
 ・Notification forms are common throughout the country.
 ・We give you a form of name change notification at the ward office Family Registry Division Family Registry Section. We do not handle in city hall, administrative service corner.
 ・Those who bring the written notice may be a messenger other than applicant.
