Supervisor (supervisor)
It's the general manager. It is placed on Forman. It is difficult to separate the duties from Forman, but after entering the port, the Company will hold basic meetings with first-class seafarers and captains regarding cargo handling, changes to important cargo handling plans, and meetings with shipping companies. Negotiations with shipping companies in normal times are different from Forman's duties in that they are supervisory duties. Therefore, it must have more experience than Forman. (Mr. Forman)
Water area facilities
General term for sea routes, lodgings, and boat pools.
Water surface storage plant
Mainly a place where logs are floated and stored on the surface of the water. Water surface storage has the advantage that the properties of wood are less likely to change and is suitable for long-term storage. However, in recent years, water storage yards have been gradually decreasing nationwide due to the shortening of the shelf life of logs, the increase in sawmill imports, and the progress of containerization.
Scrap and build method
Since 1967, the construction coordination method has been implemented by the Japan Federation of Domestic Transport Associations in order to maintain appropriate vessel charges for domestic shipping.
Stability
The resilience and stability of ships.
Stabilizer
A ship's stability device. It has a splash shape and is intended to minimize horizontal shaking due to waves. It is computer-controlled near the central drainage line of the hull, and controls the size of the splash according to the size of the waves.
Saving stone
A type of construction that produces structures by inserting rocks into the sea. It is mainly performed by construction of mounds such as breakwaters and seawalls and ditches.
Stebe
Abbreviation of stevedore. It's an on-board contractor.
Stowage Factor (Loading factor: stowage factor)

span (diameter: span)
Standard for separating cargo and cargo in container yards (CY), Marsha ring yards (MY), sheds, warehouses, cargo handling areas, etc. Or one of them. In technical terms, it also refers to bridge piers (branches) in bridges.
spine car
Carriages (for one-stage loading) that can be loaded with both containers and trailers used for railway transportation in North America.
spreader
It is a type of pavement machine that lays pavement materials, with asphalt spreaders and concrete spreaders. In some cases, it may also be used for container loading.
Space Charter (S/C: Space Charter)
Carriage Underwriter (ship company or NVOCC) rents a portion of the vessel's belly (space) from the ship operator and transports the underwritten cargo, and can be operated effectively if space can be clearly separated and exchanged according to the number of slots, such as a container ship.
Special cargo (special cargo)
Special cargo. General term for cargo that requires special equipment for transportation and storage in terms of the nature, shape, weight or price of cargo, and cargo that requires loading and handling. Specifically, it refers to hazardous materials (dangerous cargo), rotary cargo (perishable cargo), refrigerated cargo, expensive cargo (high cargo), livestock (high cargo), sublime and long cargo (mulgy and lengty cargo). Special cargo list
Dangerous goods created by a shipping company. General term for a list of special cargo such as flora and fauna, refrigerated cargo.
Spot chartered vessels
1 A ship chartered for cargo transport on a voyage. The fare is determined to be the amount per ton.
corner fitting
Brackets with holes on three sides provided at four corners and eight places in the end frame for hanging, stacking and sticking containers.
Slide van body system
Joint transportation of railways and trucks. A method in which a truck is lying on a railway wagon, and using a winch and wire installed on a truck bed, the loading platform is slipped on a truck platform and transshipped into a wagon. There is no need to use cargo handling machines such as forklifts. As an advantage, (1) it will be available at railway stations without cargo handling machines. (2)One driver can handle cargo handling. (3)Due to the horizontal cargo handling, cargo damage is small, and packaging can be simplified. This will speed up transportation, improve loading efficiency, and reduce costs.
slip (slip)
(1)Repatriation slope or sloping shipyard for repair of ships.
(2)Between the jetty and the jetty at the jetty wharf. Slip width becomes a problem due to the size of container ships.

A common name for container loading space on container ships.
