Making good fittings first
"I'm just trying to make good works," says Tanaka.
"Because the fittings are operated every day, no matter how good they look and make them well, they cannot be used as fittings unless they have dimensions. Mr. Tanaka, who says, "I think Kumiko is the ultimate goal as long as it is a fittings shop," has produced a number of works, including an impact that incorporates Kumiko.
The flower-shaped plane (kanna) that assigns the kumiko needs to be processed according to the pattern to be produced, and many flower-shaped plane (kanna) has been adjusted and improved by itself.
As the number of Japanese-style rooms is decreasing in houses, I have been a lecturer at a workshop of the Federation of Fixtures Associations and a manufacturing succession school in Kanagawa Prefecture to convey Kumiko's technology to young people.
Meister's skill
Fittings such as shoji and sliding doors are moved every time they are opened and closed, so it is important to make them well.
In addition to the basic skills of fittings that have been passed down, Mr. Tanaka has provided high-quality works by combining techniques according to the situation at the site such as housing.
In addition, he is good at making kumiko by accurately processing the materials used for kumiko and combining various patterns, incorporating kumiko into a three-sided mirror dressing table and creating spherical lanterns. I have been working on the production of works with original designs.
Profile
After graduating from high school, he joined a fittings store run by his parents' house and succeeded the family business as the third generation.
In addition to serving as a skill test committee member and a judge of the skill competition, he has participated in the National Traditional Fixture Technology Preservation Society since its inception, and has been focusing on handing down and inheriting traditional techniques and preserving valuable historical buildings.
