In addition to working on national treasure-class antiques, we hold exhibitions and workshops at the Yokohama Shibayama Lacquerware Study Group, and strive to pass on skills.
Meister's skill
Not only the skills of making Shibayama (shell and ivory work that is fitted into lacquerware in relief) by performing processes other than wood making alone, but also kyu lacquer (kyushitsu), Raden, plaintex We specialize in decoration techniques such as Hyomon and Makie.
In addition, he learns the techniques of Japanese painting from the underpainters, works on copying, drawing, and sketching antiques, and making full use of the techniques of painters and underpainters to create elaborate patterns in lacquerware.
Profile
Born in Yokohama.
He grew up in Shibayama's house from his grandfather's generation, and entered Shibayama lacquerware path at the age of 15, and learned inlaid techniques from his father.
In addition, he studied under Shibayama Shihei Sugiyama and Shogoro Hirata, and learned Shibayama sculpture.
Since then, while the surrounding craftsmen have been transferred to work, he has been particular about this path while repairing antiques such as shrines and temples, and has continued his work.
Major awards
- Received the Director of Manufacturing Industries Bureau Award of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2003 (7th Japan Ivory Crafts Exhibition).
