Q

Do I have to join National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) if I leave the company?

Last Updated October 14, 2021

National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin)
A

Those who have Address in Japan and are between the ages of 20 and 60 are required to join National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin), except those who have public pension plans such as the Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin) and Mutual Aid Association. If you no longer join Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin) as a result of leaving the company, you will be required to join National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) as the first insured person except for the third insured person listed below. Therefore, please submit a registration at [Ward Office Insurance and Pension Division National Pension Plan Section] in your ward. You do not need to join if you are receiving an old-age pension from Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin) or a retirement pension from a mutual aid association.
In addition, the spouse who is dependent on the husband (wife) of the salaried worker (second insured person) is the third insured person, but the notification is made through the company (business owner) or mutual aid association (usually set with employee health insurance) to each office of each pension.
