What is the Decarbonization Leading Area?

A decarbonized pre-decarbonized region is an area that is publicly offered by the Ministry of the Environment based on the "Regional Decarbonization Roadmap" toward carbon neutrality by 2050, and by fiscal 2030, it is an area that realizes requirements such as "substantial zero CO2 emissions associated with electricity consumption in the consumer sector (home sector, business and other sectors)" according to regional characteristics.
At least 100 areas are scheduled to be selected by 2025, and the first open call for participants (January 25 to February 21, 2022) will be implemented, and 26 regions including "Minato Mirai 21 District" have been selected (April 26, 2022).

Initiatives in areas ahead of decarbonization in the Minato Mirai 21 District

The Minato Mirai 21 district is a city where various functions such as corporate headquarters, R&D facilities, music halls, universities, and MICE bases are concentrated in addition to offices, commercial facilities and housing, and is a large energy consumption area. On the other hand, there are many companies and R&D bases that are actively engaged in decarbonization, and in Yokohama City, we aim to build a "large city decarbonization model that challenges through public-private partnerships" in cooperation with various companies in the region.

Main Initiatives

・Solar power generation facilities are installed on the rooftops of facilities in the area or on unused spaces in public facilities outside the area to decarbonize electricity by supplying generated renewable electricity.
・Thorough energy saving and creation of power supply-demand adjustment through integrated energy management, etc.
・Low and decarbonization of heat in Japan's largest regional heating and cooling area in the area
・Promotion of resource recycling through recycling of food waste and plastic bottles generated in restaurants, etc.
・Implementation of events, etc. that promote the change of behavior of each citizen and business to decarbonize
