Creating an environment that surpasses the heat based on local characteristics
In Yokohama, summer heat is becoming increasingly severe due to the overlap of the heat island phenomenon seen in urban areas, and the number of midsummer and tropical nights in the year are increasing. In order to create an environment that surpasses the heat, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of each region and incorporate effective approaches.
The protagonist of environmental creation! Tips map for creating an environment that surpasses heat
Yokohama City has a large-scale green space mainly in suburban areas, where the wind blows from two directions, Sagami Bay and Tokyo Bay in summer. Is born. For this reason, it is important to understand the characteristics of each region and create an environment that surpasses the heat. Therefore, we created an urban environment climatic map, "Hint Map for Creating an Environment that Surpasses Heat," which summarizes the characteristics of wind and green.

- The city area is divided into five zones according to the outstanding wind direction in summer and wind arrival time.
- The city area is divided into 5m x 5m meshes, and color coding in four stages with the surrounding green coverage ratio indicating the green area contained in a radius of 300m from the center of each mesh (using data from the 2019 green distribution map).
↓Please refer to the guide below for more information on how to use the hint map.↓
Make full use of the hint map! Guide for creating an environment that surpasses heat using urban environment climatic maps
This is a guide to make full use of hint maps. In three steps, we have compiled tips for thinking about specific initiatives based on regional characteristics. Examples of how to blow the wind in each zone, the green effect, and specific initiatives for each main land use for each zone are also examples, so please use them when building, development, and town development!
The building also affects the wind
Yokohama City blows as shown in the hint map in summer, but in areas where buildings are densely populated, it can be difficult to take in the wind. In such areas, we will create an environment in which the wind can be adopted for each site, such as securing open spaces, creating an environment where the wind can be incorporated throughout the city in the future. Therefore, divide the city area into 5m x 5m meshes, and use the gross building coverage ratio, which indicates the area ratio of buildings at a radius of 135m from the center of each mesh, the gross building coverage ratio of 10% from the left in the figure below. We have also created three types of maps with a gross building coverage ratio of 30% or more on the hint map, so please use it as an opportunity to think about ventilation.

Yokohama City's heat island measures
Yokohama City Heat Island Countermeasures Action Policy has been integrated with the Yokohama City Global Warming Countermeasures Action Plan. In the future, based on the action plan, we will promote heat island measures that contribute to global warming countermeasures.
