Heat Island countermeasures

The heat island phenomenon is a phenomenon in which the temperature in the city center is higher than in the suburbs, and measures are being taken as a remarkable environmental problem in large cities, and it is necessary to create an environment that overcomes the heat based on regional characteristics. Creating an environment that overcomes heat based on regional characteristics

In Yokohama City, the heat of summer is becoming increasingly severe due to the overlap of global warming and the heat island phenomenon seen in urban areas, and the number of midsummer days and tropical nights per year are on the rise. In order to create an environment that overcomes the heat, it is necessary to grasp the characteristics of each region and adopt effective approaches.

The leading role in creating an environment! Tip map for creating an environment that overcomes the heat

Yokohama City has a characteristic of having a large green space mainly in the suburbs, with wind blowing from Sagami Bay and Tokyo Bay in summer, and depending on the arrival time of this wind and the presence or absence of green space, regional differences in heat are born. For this reason, it is important to understand the characteristics of each region and create an environment that overcomes the heat. Therefore, we have created an urban environmental climate map, "Hint Map for Creating an Environment that Overcomes the Heat," which summarizes the characteristics of wind and green into one.

Tip map for creating an environment that overcomes the heat

  1. The city area is divided into five zones according to summer excellence wind direction and wind arrival time.
  2. The city area is divided into 5m x 5m meshes, and the surrounding green coverage ratio indicating the green area contained in a radius of 300m from the center of each mesh is color-coded in 4 stages (using data from the green coverage map in 2019)

↓Please refer to the guide below for details on how to use the hint map.↓

Make full use of the hint map! Guide for creating an environment that overcomes heat using urban environmental climate maps

This is a guide for making full use of hint maps. In three steps, we have compiled tips for thinking about specific initiatives based on regional characteristics. Examples of wind blowing in each zone, the effect of greenery, and specific initiatives for each main land use for each zone are also shown, so please use it when building, developing, and town development!

The wind is also affected by buildings

In the city of Yokohama, the wind blows as shown in the hint map in summer, but in areas with dense buildings, it can be difficult to incorporate the wind. In such areas, by devising so that the wind can be taken in for each site, such as securing open space, an environment where the wind can be taken in throughout the town will be created in the future. Therefore, divide the city area into a mesh of 5m x 5m, and use the gross coverage ratio, which indicates the area ratio of the building with a radius of 135m from the center of each mesh, increment the gross coverage ratio from the left in the figure below, 30% or more. We have also created three types of maps in which the gross coverage ratio is over 30% on the hint map.

Measures against heat island in Yokohama City

The Yokohama City Heat Island Countermeasures Policy has been integrated with the Yokohama City Global Warming Countermeasures Action Plan. In the future, based on the action plan, we will promote heat island measures that contribute to global warming countermeasures.

Efforts to Prevent Heat Island in Yokohama City

Yokohama City is making various efforts to mitigate the heat island phenomenon.

Watering is also effective as an approach to familiar heat island measures.
