What is SAF?
With the latest technology, aviation fuel can be produced from cooking oils (waste cooking oils) used in homes and offices. Air fuels made from waste cooking oil are called SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and can reduce life cycle CO2 emissions by about 80% compared to conventional aviation fuels.
Participation in the Fry to Fly Project
The Fry to Fly Project aims to promote resource decarbonization in Japan by promoting the collection of waste cooking oil discharged from homes and stores, etc., and conducting educational activities related to the utilization of waste cooking oil in SAF in cooperation with local governments. Yokohama City participated in April 2023. For more information, please visit the following website.

Efforts to convert household waste cooking oil into SAF in cooperation with JAL
It is said that about 100,000 tons of household waste cooking oil is disposed of throughout Japan every year. Yokohama City and Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (JAL) have concluded a cooperation agreement on the construction of a system for collecting waste cooking oil generated at home in Yokohama City and recycling it into SAF, etc., and promoting social implementation.
