In the old ports could not secure enough water, and it was difficult for large cargo ships to berth directly to the port, so using a special port carrier called `` barge '' that could not be self-propelled, It was carrying cargo between the landing site.
In today's port, large ships can directly berth directly to the port, and for container-only vessels, which are the mainstream container-only vessels carry cargo handling work on huge gantry cranes installed on the quay, The number of barges is almost gone.

The efficiency of container barge transport was verified by the Container Transport Efficiency Study Committee established in 2004, and was started in 2006 by the Yokohama Hatake Transport Business Cooperative Association (outside site). Currently, it plays a role in transporting marine containers between ports in Tokyo Bay, Yokohama Port, Kawasaki Port, Tokyo and Chiba Port. (Details of Introduction)

The feature of container barge transport is that a container-specific barge, called a "container barge" is pushed from behind with a pusher boat instead of pulling it by boat like conventional bars.

Container barge transport is capable of transport, comparable to 80 or more trucks at a time, and is expected to have a significant energy-saving effect. By connecting Yokohama ports in Tokyo Bay by container barge transport, it is also expected to reduce congestion on roads in the Tokyo metropolitan area and around the port, and 12 flights a week in Tokyo Bay (as of September 2023) ).
