What is a barge?

In the old port, the water depth could not be sufficiently secured, and it was difficult for large cargo ships to directly berth the port, so a special port transport ship called "barge" was used to carry cargo between the cargo and the landing area.
At present, large ships can directly berth at the port, and even for container-only ships, which are the mainstream, cargo handling with huge gantry cranes installed on the quay, the old-fashioned barges are almost gone.

The efficiency of container barge transportation was verified through transportation experiments by the Container Transport Efficiency Review Committee, which was established in 2004, and started by the Yokohama Hashike Transport Business Cooperative (external site) in 2006. Was. Currently, it is part of the transportation of marine containers between Yokohama Port, Kawasaki Port, Tokyo Port, and Chiba Port. (Details of introduction)

The characteristic of container barge transportation is that a container-only barge called a "container barge" is pushed from behind on a pusher boat instead of pulling it on a boat like a conventional barge.

Container barge transportation is capable of transporting large quantities of containers, equivalent to more than 80 trucks at a time, and is expected to have a significant energy saving effect. By connecting each port in Tokyo Bay from Yokohama by container barge transportation, it is also expected to reduce congestion on roads around the Tokyo metropolitan area and the port, and it operates 12 flights a week in Tokyo Bay (as of September 2023).
