Promotion of Green Logistics at Yokohama Port

Last update date December 20, 2023

Carbon dioxide Emissions per Transportation

City of Yokohama, Port and Harbor Bureau is working to expand its domestic transport network for marine containers by coastal feeder transport, container barge, and rail transport.
These transportation methods are expected to expand the use of these transportation methods to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce energy consumption.

Details of Green Logistics

Coastal feeder transport

Coastal vessel

Transport by domestic feeder vessels can transport large amounts of marine containers at once, so CO2 emissions per tonne are lower than trucks, making it an energy-saving and environmentally friendly transportation mode. Currently, domestic feeder vessels are networked with the Pacific coasts of Hokkaido, Tohoku, Tokai and Kansai regions.

Container barge transport

Container barge

The container barge that connects Yokohama and Tokyo and Chiba by sea, can transport a large amount of marine containers comparable to 80 trucks at a time.
In addition to reducing CO2 emissions per ton transport through energy-saving effects, the project is expected to reduce congestion on roads in the Tokyo metropolitan area and around ports.
