Pet measures in the event of a disaster (wind and flood damage)
Last Updated August 30, 2024
Typhoons and other storms and floods can be predicted in advance, so it is important to prepare in advance so that evacuation can be evacuated promptly when evacuation is needed.
Preparation for a day
Depending on the scale and facilities of the disaster, temporary breeding places in evacuation sites during storms and floods are never the best places for pets.
In addition, it is expected that evacuation with pets after the rainy and wind becomes severe (evacuation with pets) is very difficult.
For these reasons, it is important to secure a temporary storage place for pets and establish an evacuation action plan, especially in preparation for disasters.
(1) Securing temporary storage for pets
We have cooperation from Yokohama-shi Veterinary Medical Association and publish. For more information, please refer to the link below.
(2) My Timeline (Evacuation Action Plan)
Yokohama City recommends the creation of a My Timeline (evacuation action plan) for each individual.
Check the hazard map (disaster prevention map) of your area, and in the case of an area where damage is expected, consider pets so that you can evacuate quickly in an emergency, such as by leaving it at a temporary storage place requested in advance. Let's think about my timeline with family.

2 Evacuation of pets
Evacuation with pets means evacuating to an evacuation center with pets in the event of a disaster. It is a word that indicates evacuation behavior, and does not mean that the owner breeds and manages pets in the same room in the evacuation center.
Evacuation of pets is a necessary measure not only from the viewpoint of animal welfare, but also from the viewpoint of preventing harm from wandering animals to humans and living environment conservation.
(1)Evacuation destinations and evacuation behavior
Consider and prepare various evacuation actions, such as (1) vertical evacuation and horizontal evacuation to safe places, (2) breeding at temporary shelters, and (3) evacuation to evacuation sites, etc.
(2) Points to note when evacuating to evacuation sites
evacuation sites is used by people who are not good at animals or those who are allergic to animals. When breeding and managing the accompanying pets, observe the following rules in evacuation sites:
・ There is no stockpile of pets in evacuation sites. Please bring all necessary items such as cages, food, pet sheets, medicine, etc.
・ Pets must be kept in a cage at the designated temporary breeding area, and should not be placed elsewhere.
・ In evacuation sites, the owner should cooperate with each other so as not to disturb other evacuees at the responsibility of the owner.
・ When returning to a person's evacuation sites from a temporary breeding area, remove the hair and dirt on your clothes.
・ If you are instructed by staff, please follow the instructions immediately.
・ After use, the owners should cooperate with each other to clean and ventilate, and remove fur, excrement, etc.
・ Please bring your own excrement and garbage that came out during use.
(3) Regarding the possibility of evacuation of pets in evacuation sites in each ward
Please refer to the pages of each ward to confirm whether evacuation is possible in each evacuation sites.
