As a sister city of Odesa, Ukraine, a peace messenger city certified by the United Nations, Yokohama City provides a variety of local and refugee support.

Opened "Ukraine Exchange Cafe Druzzy" (April 28, 2022)

We have opened a Ukrainian Exchange Cafe to provide hospitality to those who have been evacuated from Ukraine to Yokohama.
It will be used as a place where Ukrainian refugees can exchange information in their native language and interact with peace of mind, and as a place to connect requests from citizens and businesses with refugees.

Yokohama City supports the safe and secure life of refugees in All Yokohama in cooperation with citizens, companies, and private organizations, to support the safe and secure lives of refugees in All Yokohama.

A donation box was set up (April 8 to June 10, 2022, ended)

We have set up donation boxes at the Yokohama City Hall and all ward offices to support refugees, mainly from Ukraine. Thank you very much for your kind cooperation. The results are as follows.

 14,868,912 yen
 [Reference] Fundraising period: From Tuesday, April 12, 2022 to Friday, June 10
     Donation box installation location: Yokohama City Hall, all ward offices in 18 wards
The donations collected were handed to the Yokohama YMCA, a public interest incorporated foundation in the “All Yokohama Support Package”, and was used as lump-sum payments and living expenses for evacuees.


The funds raised from Thursday, March 10 to Monday, April 11, 2022, totaled 23,868,146 yen, and was remitted to the Ukrainian Red Cross on Friday, April 22.

It has been reported that the number of refugees in and out of Ukraine following the Russian invasion has already exceeded 10 million as of March 20, and is expected to increase in the future. In order to not only accept those who have been forced to evacuate, but also to provide support for stable living after that, we have set up the Yokohama City Ukraine Refugees Support Team in the International Strategy Promotion Headquarters.

Meeting with the Ukrainian Ambassador to Japan (March 16, 2022)


State of the meeting

Mayor Yamanaka and Chairman Shimizu visited the Embassy of Ukraine in Japan and met with Ambassador Sergei Kolsonsky.
Mayor Yamanaka and Chairman Shimizu stated that they would continue to provide support in cooperation with the Embassy, including the fact that many citizens are donating 20 million yen from Yokohama City to the Ukrainian Red Cross, and that they would continue to provide support in cooperation with the embassy, including the situation in which many citizens are donating to the fundraising being carried out at the City Hall.
Ambassador Kolsonsky expressed his gratitude for the specific support from Yokohama, and expressed his hope for the development of the Yokohama Odesa partnership and the reconstruction of Odesa after peace has returned to Ukraine.

Online meeting with Mayor Odesa (March 4, 2022)


Online Meeting

We received a message from the city of Odesa during the war that we would like to receive a message of support from the city, and held an online meeting between the two mayors. At the meeting, Mayor Yamanaka expressed his concern about the safety of our sister cities, Odesa and Ukraine.
At the same time, as a peace messenger city, the city hall is lit up in the color of the Ukrainian flag color indicates that the hearts of Yokohama citizens is with Odesa and Ukrainian citizens, and that they are thinking about what they can do for Odesa citizens.
"As Ukraine is being attacked by Russia, Odesa citizens are working hard to protect the historic and wonderful city. Thank you for the support and encouragement of Yokohama City, which has been interacting for many years, and I am very encouraging. I would like to make a better relationship in the future. "

City Hall Light Up (March 2, 2022)

With protests against Russia's invasion of Ukraine and prayers for international peace, a part of the Yokohama City Hall will be lit up in blue and yellow, inspired by the Ukrainian flag.
