Preservation and Research Center, City of Yokohama, together with Onshi Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, Japan, succeeded in collecting semen from wild grouse at Mount Norikura from May 25 to 26, 2024.
The collected semen was refrigerated from Mt. Norikura to the nearby Toyama City Family Park, and then injected into the breeding female by the park. After that, two chicks were born on June 28, and succeeded in artificial breeding using refrigerated semen of wild males.
Since FY2021, Preservation and Research Center, City of Yokohama has been working with Ueno Zoo to develop artificial breeding techniques for Japanese Rock Ptarmigan.
