I look forward to the new Yokohama-bijutsukan! -From the Samurai Era to the present―

Yokohama-bijutsukan Deputy Director and Chief Curator Tomoo Kashiwagi

Do you know about the Yokohama Exposition held in 1989?
Presented as one of the pavilions, Yokohama-bijutsukan, when the exposition ended and other pavilions disappeared, became a form proud of Potun and its dignity in the center of the desolate Minato Mirai District 21. There's no landmark tower yet. As dump trucks and heavy equipment threw up dust and came and went constantly, Yokohama-bijutsukan opened and began his art museum activities.
35 years have passed since then. Built to attract a variety of commercial facilities, office buildings, hotels and condominiums, the Minato Mirai 21 district now offers Yokohama's representative cityscape, and is crowded with many visitors. Yokohama-bijutsukan is located at the center of Yokohama's main cultural facilities.

Museum concept and opening of Yokohama City

It was in 1981 (Showa 56) that the city of Yokohama began to move concretely toward the construction of the museum. In January of that year, a proposal from the Yokohama City Cultural Affairs Roundtable pointed out that "art museums are indispensable facilities for citizens' lives", and the Yokohama City Museum of Art Basic Design Committee was established in June, and in March of the following year a report on the basic concept of the museum was presented by the committee.
Based on this report, the philosophy of the museum was defined as "a modern and contemporary art museum with internationality", "a museum with the function of an art information center along with the collection, preservation and exhibition of art materials, as well as education and dissemination of art and the function of an art information center", "a museum that collects photographs" and "a museum that provides a place for appreciation and creation for citizens and artists."
The construction site of the museum has been decided in the center of Minato Mirai 21 district. The design by Kenzo Tange Institute for Urban and Architectural Design was completed in the fall of 1985 (Showa 60), and construction began on December 25, the same year as the first permanent facility in the area.
As noted at the beginning, it was opened on March 25, 1989 under the name "Yokohama-bijutsukan" as a facility commemorating the 100th anniversary of the municipal organization and the 130th anniversary of the opening of the port.

This point in Yokohama-bijutsukan

Since Yokohama-bijutsukan was a late public museum, it was necessary to form a unique collection that was different from other museums. Based on the proposal of the Yokohama City Museum of Art Basic Design Committee, a basic policy was formulated by the city, and with the great cooperation of citizens, we started collecting art materials in 1982 (Showa 57). . More than 40 years later, more than 14,000 collections have been formed.
In this article, I would like to introduce one of them.

Matazaemon Endo and his servant
Eli Faret Brown Jr. "Matazaemon Endo and servant" 1854 (Kaei 7), Daguerreotype, Important Cultural Property, Yokohama-bijutsukan Collection

This time, I would like to introduce a daguereo type (silver plate photo) entitled "Matazaemon Endo and servant". It is a gem designated as a national important cultural property because of its high value as a work of art and historical materials. This photo comes with a piece of paper stating "This image of shadow / Admiral Asia / Gift / Matazaemon Endo / Kotora May 6th" and shows that it was presented by Admiral Perry. You.
In 1854 (Kaei 7), Perry, who signed the Japan-US Peace Treaty in Yokohama, then went on a tour of Hakodate (Hakodate). So, one of the Matsumae feudal lords who negotiated externally was Endo Matazaemon, a servant of the Edo clan residence. "Matazaemon Endo and servant" was photographed by E. Brown Jr., a photographer and printmaker who accompanied Perry. It is considered to be one of the oldest surviving Japanese statues photographed in Japan.
Endo Matazaemon was a mild Noh official who was highly evaluated for his calm negotiation skills. It was such a Matazaemon, but 14 years after this photo was taken, in front of his wife and a legitimate son, he was killed at his own residence in the Edo clan residence and was ranked first.
Tokuhiro Matsumae, who became the 13th lord of Matsumae in 1866 (Keio 2), was unable to take political affairs due to his illness. In such a situation, more than 40 vassals caused internal conflicts and purged Endo and others. It was 1868, 1868. This work is one of the few visual historical materials that convey the appearance of Samurai, who had to live in a tense world in both domestic and domestic diplomacy on the eve of the Meiji Restoration.

I look forward to the new Yokohama-bijutsukan!

The Yokohama-bijutsukan, which holds many treasures of Yokohama citizens, has been closed for large-scale renovation since March 2021, but was completed in November last year (partially in January this year). In the new Yokohama-bijutsukan, you will be able to enter and exit the art library directly from the Grand Mall Park "Bijutsuno-hiroba" in front of you, making it easier to browse art books and other specialized books. A new glass gallery was also added in front of the library. Shops and cafes are also newly opened. The facilities of the atelier will also be updated to develop even more fulfilling activities. The Grand Gallery at the entrance will have a new space for children, as well as plenty of new chairs and tables, allowing anyone to enter and exit freely and relax. And from November of this year, these facilities will finally open.
In addition, since 2011 (Heisei 23), it has become the main venue for the Yokohama Triennale, which has attracted attention as an international exhibition of contemporary art, and has been working on its implementation. Right now we are holding the 8th Yokohama Triennale Wildflower: I'm alive here, and we are welcoming many visitors every day. Based on the history of Yokohama, we will continue to capture various arts and culture from various perspectives, from modern art since the mid-19th century to cutting-edge contemporary art, both inside and outside the country.
Please look forward to the new Yokohama-bijutsukan.
