April 2023 issue Western-style building in Yamate

 Yokohama with sea, port, greenery, history, region, people and various attractions. We will deliver the color of this city as "Yokohama Aya Discovery". This time, I would like to talk about the Western-style building in Yamate (Yamate-cho, Naka-ku).

Information on Yokohama Yamate West Museum

 In the Yokohama Yamate area, there are still buildings built as foreign houses, and all 7 Western-style buildings owned by the city and open to the public can be entered free of charge (there are closed days). In the hall, quaint Yokohama furniture and furnishings are arranged, and seasonal hardness, concerts, and weddings are held in a retro atmosphere. Why don't you take a stroll through the city of Yamate, which still retains the remnants of foreign settlements, and visit the Western-style building standing in a lush park? Here, we introduce each building for each park located.

Yamate Italian Garden

 It is an Italian-style garden with geometric and symmetrical waterways and flower beds, where you can see the Minato Mirai 21 district and Mount Fuji. From 1860 (Meiji 13) to 1886 (Meiji 19), it was named "Mt. Italy" because the Italian Consulate was located here. (5-minute walk from JR Ishikawacho Station South Exit or Motomachi Exit)
(1)Gaikokannno-ie / Diplomat's House

Gaikokannno-ie / Diplomat's House

 It was built in Nanpeidai, Shibuya, Tokyo in 1910, designed by an American architect J.M. Guardiner, as the residence of Sadatsuchi Uchida, a diplomat of the Meiji government who served as Consul-General of New York and Ambassador of Turkey. Originally, the Western-style building and the Japanese-style building were connected by a corridor, but in 1997, the Western-style building was relocated to its current location. The symbol is an octagonal tower with a pointed roof, with a dining room and large and small guest rooms, so that you can survive the life of the former diplomat. Bluff 18 Ban-kan 

 The residence of Australian trading merchant Bauden, built at 45 Yamatemachi at the end of Taisho, was used as the priest's house in Catholic Yamate Church until 1991 (Heisei 3). In 1993, it was relocated and restored to the Italian mountain garden, and the contrast between white walls and orange French tiles, green window frames and colors is impressive, and the fireplace chimneys, up and down windows, armor doors, sunrooms, and middle corridors It has typical characteristics of foreign houses before the earthquake, such as a flat structure. Motomachi Park

 Located on the topography called Tando from Motomachi to Yamate, there are also the ruins of Gerard's water mansion, the ruins of Yamate 80th Building, the Motomachi Pool and Kyudo Hall in deep greenery. (8-minute walk from Exit 5 or 6 of Motomachi-Chukagai Station on Minato Mirai Line)

Berrick Hall 

 It was built in 1930 (Showa 5) by J.H. Morgan as the residence of British trade merchant B.R. Berwick. It was used as a home until before World War II, but after the war it was used as a dormitory for St Joseph International School. Based on a Spanish style, there are many architectural highlights such as the entrance porch of the triple arch and the four-leaf small window on the second floor, making it the largest Western-style building existing in Yamate before the war. Ehrismann Residence

 Designed by A Raymond, the father of modern Japanese architecture, it was built at 127 Yamate-cho in 1926 (Daisho 15) as a private residence of Ellis Man, who was the ruler of the raw silk trading company Seabelhegner Shokai. Was. It was once dismantled in 1982 (Showa 57) for the construction of an apartment, but was relocated and restored to its current location in 1990 (Heisei 2) due to the efforts of related parties. Yamate 234 Ban-Kan

 Around 1927 (Showa 2), it was built as an apartment house for foreigners designed by Yoshizo Asaka. Initially, the dwelling units with two symmetrical layouts face each other across the central entrance porch, and it was a total of four apartments that overlapped the upper and lower two layers. It was used as a house until the 1950s, and has been open to the public since 1999. Currently, the second floor has been renovated into a gallery, etc., and is used for exhibitions and conferences. Harbor View Park (Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen)

 This park is located on a small hill overlooking Yokohama Port and is a great view point overlooking Yokohama Bay Bridge. The English rose garden in the park is one of the most famous roses in Yokohama. (5-minute walk from Exit 5 or 6 of Motomachi-Chukagai Station in Minato Mirai Line)

 It is a solid reinforced concrete building built in 1937 as the official residence of the British Consul-General, designed by the General Office of the British Ministry of Engineering in Shanghai. The first floor has a sunroom and a hall on the south side, connecting to a spacious garden, and the second floor is a private space such as a bedroom and a dressing room. The British style is drifting everywhere, such as the GRVI1937, which shows the reign and completion year of George VI on the side of the entrance, the emblem engraved with the crown, and the copper plate of the British Consular Residence, which is displayed on Masakadowaki. . Yamate 111 Ban-Kan

 In 1926 (Daisho 15), it was built at the present location as the residence of American J.E. Laffin, designed by J.H. Morgan. It is a Spanish-style building with beautiful contrast between red tiles and white walls, and a three-piece arch on the front stands out. The hall, just after entering the entrance, blows up to the second floor, creating an elegant atmosphere with a chandelier suspended from the ceiling and two fireplaces adjacent to the dining room and back-to-back.  The Western-style buildings that are open to the public are dotted along the Harbor View Park (Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen) and Yamate-Hon Dori, and it takes 2-3 hours to explore each museum.
