April 2023 Issue Western-style building in Yamate

 Yokohama has the sea, port, greenery, history, region, people, and various attractions. We will deliver the color of this town as "Yokohama Aya Discovery". This time, we will talk about the Western-style building in Yamate (Yamate-cho, Naka-ku).

Information on Yokohama Yamate Western-style building

 In the Yokohama Yamate area, there are still buildings built as foreign houses, and all seven Western-style buildings owned by the city and open to the public, can be entered free of charge (there are closed). Quint Yokohama furniture and furnishings are arranged in the hall, and seasonal hardships, concerts, weddings, etc. are also held in a retro atmosphere. Why don't you visit the Western-style building in a lush park while strolling through the city of Yamate, which still retains the remnants of a foreign settlement? Here, we introduce each building for each park where we are located.

Yamate Italian Garden

 It is an Italian-style garden with waterways and flower beds in geometric and symmetrically arranged with waterways and flower beds, giving you a view of Minato Mirai 21 district and Mount Fuji. From 1860 (Meiji 13) to 1886 (Meiji 19), it was named "Italy Mountain" because the Italian Consulate was set up here. (5 minutes on foot from JR Ishikawacho Station South Exit or Motomachi Exit)

Gaikokannno-ie / Diplomat's House

 The residence of Sadatsuchi Uchida, a diplomat of the Meiji government who served as Consul General of New York and Ambassador Extraordinary Plenipotentiary and Plenipotentiary of Turkey, was designed by American architect J.M. Gardiner. Originally, it was a building where the Western-style building and a Japanese-style building were connected by a corridor, but in 1997, the Western-style building was relocated to its current location. The symbol is an octagonal tower with a pointed roof, and has a cafeteria that welcomes many visitors and a large and small guest rooms, so you can survive the lives of diplomats in the past. Bluff 18 Ban-kan 

 The residence of Australian trader Baden, built at 45 Yamatemachi at the end of Taisho, was used as a priest's residence in Catholic Yamate Church until 1991. In 1993, it was relocated and restored in the Italian mountain garden, and the contrast between white walls and orange French tiles, green window frames and colors is impressive. It has typical features of foreign houses before the earthquake, such as a flat structure. [Yokohama City Certified Historic Building]

Motomachi Park

 Located on the topography of Tando from Motomachi to Yamate, the deep greenery is home to Gerard's waterhouse, Yamate 80th building ruins, the Motomachi Pool and Kyudo Hall. (8 minutes walk from Exit 5 or 6 of Motomachi-Chukagai Station, Minato Mirai Line)
(3)Berrick Hall

Berrick Hall 

 It was built in 1930 (Showa 5) as the residence of British trader B.R. Berwick, designed by J.H. Morgan. It was used as a residence before World War II, but after the war it was used as a dormitory for St. Joseph International School. Based on the Spanish style, there are many architectural highlights such as a triple arch entrance porch and a small four-leaf small window on the second floor, making it the largest Western-style building that exists in Yamate before the war. Ehrismann Residence

 Designed by A. Raymond, the father of modern Japanese architecture, it was built at 127 Yamatecho in 1926 (Daisho 15) as a private residence of Ellis Man, who was the dominant character of the raw silk trader Seabel Hagner Shokai. . It was once dismantled for the construction of an apartment in 1982 (Showa 57), but it was relocated and restored to its current location in 1990 by the efforts of the parties concerned. (5)Yamate 234 Ban-Kan

Yamate 234 Ban-Kan

 Around 1927 (Showa 2), it was built as an apartment house for foreigners designed by Yoshizo Asaka. Initially, two symmetrical dwelling units facing each other across the entrance porch in the central part, and it was a total of four apartments, with two symmetrical floor plans facing each other across the entrance porch. It was used as a house until the 1950s, and has been open to the public since 1999. Currently, the second floor has been renovated into a gallery and is used for exhibitions and conferences. Harbor View Park (Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen)

 This park is located on a small hill overlooking Yokohama Port, and is a great view point overlooking Yokohama Bay Bridge. The English Rose Garden in the park is one of the most famous rose spots in Yokohama. (5 minutes on foot from Exit 5 or 6 of Motomachi-Chukagai Station in Minato Mirai Line)
(6)Yokohama-shi British House Yokohama

 This is a heavy reinforced concrete building built in 1937 as the British Consul General Office in Shanghai, designed by the General Office of the British Works Department in Shanghai. On the first floor, a sunroom and a hall are arranged on the south side, leading to a spacious garden, and the second floor is a private space such as a bedroom and a dressing room. The British style is everywhere, such as the `` GRVI1937 '' indicating the reign of George VI and the year of completion of George VI, the emblem engraved with the crown, and the copper plate of `` British Consular Residence '' raised on Masa Kadowaki. . (7)Yamate 111 Ban-Kan

Yamate 111 Ban-Kan

 In 1926 (Daisho 15), it was built at its current location as the residence of American J.E. Luffin. It is a Spanish-style building with a beautiful contrast between red tiles and white walls, and the three arches on the front stand out. Immediately after entering the entrance, the hall has through to the second floor, with chandeliers suspended from the ceiling and the two fireplaces behind the dining room and the two fireplaces back back to create an elegant atmosphere.  The Western Museum, which is open to the public, is dotted along the Harbor View Park (Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen) and Yamate-Hon Dori, and it takes two to three hours to walk around.
