Among the Yokohama Shinkatsuyaki, Yokohama Shibayama Lacquerware, Yokohama Sculpture Furniture, and Yokohama Export Scarves, the previous three were photo A Yokohama Shinkatsu ware "Takaga Nezai Craft Vase" (collected by Miyakawa Kayama Mkatsu Museum) and Photo D Yokohama Sculpture Furniture "Tansu" (collected by the Yokohama City Museum of History). These forms supported by technology have had a great impact both domestically and internationally, coupled with the occasional Japonisme boom, with the national policy of expanding exports from Japan to Europe and the United States.
In addition, the export crafts featured in this exhibition have the characteristic of production by a division of labor system of craftsmen. In the case of Yokohama Shinkatsu ware, molding and painting. In the case of Yokohama Shibayama lacquerware, it is a work that is supported by the high technical skills of those craftsmen, such as painters, painters, lacquerers, and sculptors, as well as securing the quantity that can be produced by the division of labor. Therefore, it is characterized by the fact that it was a craft that was highly regarded as a work of art.

At Yokohama Shinkatsu-yaki, the style was changed and changed before the fashion of the three-dimensional design fell to match the tastes of the market, in order to match the popularity of the fashion. By the way, Yokohama Shinkatsu ware has the ability to respond to the times like this, but the kilns and workshops were damaged by the Great Yokohama Air Raid in 1945 (Showa 20), and its history has been closed.

The Yokohama export scarves began with the manufacture of handkerchiefs (handbags) shortly after the opening of the port (1859), but until the early Showa era, they began to manufacture scarves based on orders from overseas. As a printing technology in the Edo period, there is a woodcut printing technology called "Narisen", which was developed by the spread of ukiyo-e and Soso paper. The dyeing and weaving of scarves with woodcut printing was at its peak from Taisho to the early Showa era. Later, in the early Showa era, a technology called `` screen printing '' was introduced, in which colors are layered on the fabric using a mold plate covering the patterned part on the silk screen, and unlike woodcut printing, long fabrics can be dyed. In addition, since the color stops by steaming and extra dyes by water washing were washed and removed, beautiful products that do not faded can be made. The history of this scarf dyeing and weaving can be said to be an example of a major development of industry by introducing new technologies based on previous technologies.

Yokohama Sculpture Furniture incorporates the sculpture technique "Miya Carving" found in shrines and temples, and is a Japanese-Western eclectic furniture with Orient designs such as dragons and Shochiku plums on chairs, tables, chests, etc. From the latter half of the 1890s to the 1930s, it was mainly produced for export in Yokohama, and was also used in foreign residences living in Yokohama. Photo D Yokohama Sculpture Furniture "Tansu" is a Yokohama Sculpture Furniture made from the end of Taisho to the beginning of the Showa era, brought by the owner's wife on marriage, and "grape", a symbol of fertility, is distributed throughout the furniture by the shrine carving. This is a somewhat calmer design than the one made for foreigners, and it is thought that it was made by ordering the sculpture design.

This time, it is a valuable opportunity to see Yokohama Shinkatsu ware, Yokohama Shibayama lacquerware, Yokohama sculpture furniture, Yokohama export scarves, and these materials bearing Yokohama in one hall. I hope you will not only give an overview of the history of these export crafts, but also feel the appeal of the world.
This exhibition will be held at the same time as the Yokohama City Designated and Registered Cultural Properties Exhibition in 2023.
