"Yokohama Marathon 2023" will be held on Sunday, October 29.
Now, the Yokohama Marathon has become established as one of the largest citizen marathons in the prefecture where more than 20,000 runners run through famous places in Yokohama, but did you know that the beginning was a citizen's signature activity?
As the citizens marathon boom spread around the world, many voices have been calling for a marathon event in Yokohama, and signing activities began in 1980 (Showa 55). In September of the same year, 103,741 signatures gathered, and the first Yokohama Marathon was held in 1981 (Showa 56).

The first memorable tournament was held on Sunday, November 29, 1981 (Showa 56), with 20km (general) and 10km (under 29 years old, under 30s, 40s, 50s, general girls, high school boys, high school girls, and over 60 years oldYamashita Koen-mae.

After that, the course was changed and the number of participation slots was expanded. At the 7th tournament in 1987 (Showa 62), the number of applicants exceeded 10,000. The half marathon started from the 12th tournament in 1992, and was held until the 33rd.
In response to many voices wishing to hold a full marathon, discussions on concepts, tournament courses, etc. were started in 2013. And, in 2015 (Heisei 27), with the catchphrase "Run in Yokohama, change the world", a full marathon "Yokohama Marathon 2015" that all people can enjoy "do, see, and support" It was held on Sunday, March 15th.
At the same time, marathon competitions in each ward are also actively held, and participation slots in cooperation with the Yokohama Marathon have been set up.
In 2020 (Reiwa 2), the event was abandoned due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. In 2021 (Ryowa 3), only online marathons were held, but last year it was the first real event in three years in 2022 (Ryowa 4).

At the Yokohama Marathon 2023, there are three types of "Pair Relay", which aims to finish 42.195 km in a relay format of a pair of two people, "Fan Run (Family)" for parents and children, and "Fan Run (Junior High School)" for junior high school students. It has been newly established, and a wide range of people, from children to adults, can participate.
In addition, there will be many fun events on the course and tournament-related events.
Projects on the course include “water supply performance” that encourages runners through performances such as cheer and musical instrument performances at each water station, and “Lucky school lunch” that provides a limited number of items for a fixed time, mainly in Yokohama and Kanagawa.
