Dental and Mouth Health Information

Two major diseases of teeth

Cavities and periodontal disease are two major diseases: teeth, which account for nearly 70% of the causes of tooth loss.

Cavities are a disease in which the teeth are melted by acids produced by the cavities that cause cavities, and are said to occur when "bacteria, carbohydrates, tooth quality and time" are combined.

-It's important to prevent caries~

■Toothpaste

■Cleaning between teeth (using dental floss or interdental brush)

■Use of products containing fluorine compounds (tooth brushing powder, mouthwash, gel, etc.)

■Appropriate intake of carbohydrates

■Regular dental checkups

In periodontal disease, the causative bacteria of periodontal disease enter the inside of the gums from the periodontal pocket (groove between teeth and gums) and cause inflammation.

It is a disease that eventually melts the bones by progressing to the bones that support the teeth and makes the teeth glagle.

The cause of periodontal disease is plaque (plaque) attached to the surface of the teeth.

-It is important to prevent periodontal disease ~

■Toothpaste

■Cleaning between teeth (using dental floss or interdental brush)

■Regular dental checkups

■Use of mouthwash

■Non-smoking

8020 (Hachimarunimaru) Exercise

The 8020 (Hachimarunimaru) exercise is an exercise that says, "Let's keep 20 teeth at the age of 80."

A survey of the number of teeth and the situation when chewing revealed that if more than 20 teeth remained, the percentage of people who answered that they could chew and eat anything was more than 80%. . (Figure 1)

For this reason, it is thought that those who are 80 years old and have 20 teeth can eat a variety of ingredients and eat a well-balanced meal.

Now in a super-aging society, let's take care of teeth and mouth so that we can leave 20 teeth at the age of 80.

Oral frail

Do you know the word "oral frail"?

Oral frail is said to be the "weakness of the mouth" that begins with the trivial decline of the mouth.

※Example of a slight decline in the mouth: Squeezing, not chewing hard things, lacking appetite, poor tongue, dry mouth, etc.

Oral frail is a condition between the state of health and the state of need for nursing care. Therefore, it is possible to maintain a healthy mouth function by preventing and improving at the oral frail stage.

About prevention, improvement method, please see oral frail prevention leaflet (PDF: 927KB).

Oral care in the event of a disaster

We do not know when and where disasters such as heavy rains, typhoons, and earthquakes that exceed the alert level will occur. If you are affected, know and prepare what kind of oral care you can do.

[What kind of items should I prepare?]

□Toothbrush □Dental floss □Interdental brush □Mouthwash or liquid toothbrushing agent □Wet sheet for oral care □Cotton swab □Cup

□Denture container □Cleaning agent for dentures □Tissue paper

※If you have dentures, don't forget to hold them when you evacuate.

[Why do you need oral care?]

In the event of a disaster, it is difficult to live a daily life due to the effects of water outages and power outages.

In addition, immunity is easily reduced from various stresses and insomnia in evacuation centers and unfamiliar environments, so bacteria in the mouth increase and respiratory infections such as pneumonia and colds are more likely to develop.

In order to prevent these, oral care must be provided even during a disaster.

[How do you care for the oral cavity?]

■If there is water

If you have a toothbrush, brush your teeth. Even if there is no toothpaste, you can remove plaque (plaque) by applying water and polishing.

If you don't have a toothbrush, gargle with water, liquid toothpaste or mouthwash. It is available to lift and spit out dirt in your mouth.

■When there is no water

Remove dirt in your mouth with a towel or tissue paper as much as possible. If you have a liquid toothpaste or mouthwash, you can easily remove plaque (plaque) by using it together.

In addition, wet sheet for oral care is also available to remove dirt and refresh your mouth.

In the event of a disaster, it is easy to get tired both physically and mentally. Let's protect your health from oral care.

Aspiration pneumonia (I can't say)

Aspiration is when bacteria in the mouth accidentally enter the trachea along with food and saliva that should enter the esophagus. When aspiration is made, a cough comes out to try to come out foreign matter.

However, if the reflection does not occur, it enters the lungs as it is and causes pneumonia.

This is "aspiration pneumonia."

The cause of aspiration is mainly the weakening of swallowing power.

To prevent aspiration pneumonia, take the following actions:

■To increase the number of chewing, to train the function of the mouth with healthy exercises, and to train the ability to swallow.

■After every meal, brush your teeth and reduce the number of bacteria on a daily basis.

Chewing 30 (Sanmaru) Exercise

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare advocates the "Chumming 30" campaign, which encourages the habit of chewing more than 30 times per unit. (※1)

This exercise has been shown to promote dietary education through eating methods to address various problems associated with recent changes in food, and to help lead a healthier life.

In addition, fast eating has a close relationship with obesity, and "chewing slowly and well" is positioned as a "chewing method" in the guidelines for treating obesity as one of the behavioral treatments in obesity measures. (※2)
