August issue I will tell you the new charm of the library! Chuo-toshokan Report

Do you usually use the library? There is one library in each ward in Yokohama City. This time, I have been looking for new charms in Chuo-toshokan, which plays a central role in City Library.

Last Updated December 11, 2023

"Floor of Exchange and Learning" has been created.

In general, libraries are where they read books quietly. However, there were many voices saying that they wanted to enjoy books with their friends and small children, and to do research while talking. Therefore, in March 2013, Chuo-toshokan reopened a floor for exchange and learning on the first basement floor.
In addition to the viewing space for CDs and DVDs, there are seats where you can study and learn while talking in groups. In the "Joint Learning Room", you can connect a PC or smartphone to an electronic blackboard to learn using a large screen and discuss in groups.
It can be used free of charge, so please make a reservation from the web page.

The mobile library is Makaze No. 2 in your town.

Find a sora and Yume with Hamakaze No. 2

In the spring of 2022, "Hamakaze No. 2" was newly added to the mobile library. With approximately 3,000 books, they operate at 29 locations in the city every two weeks, and provide services such as lending, returning, and reservation of books. Along with the empty body Hamakaze No. 2, the mascot characters "Yume" and "Sora" are very popular with children.
Please check the web page for details.

There are also many services for those who have difficulty reading in print.

There were a variety of services for those who have difficulty reading books due to visual impairment. You can listen to book readings face-to-face and online, and also borrow talking books and digital books. Chuo-toshokan is looking for people who can cooperate in making digital books until Monday, August 15, 2022.
At the elementary school student corner on the first floor, there is also an "apple shelf" that collects books that use a lot of photographs and books that can be enjoyed by touching, so that children who have difficulty reading in print can get acquainted with books.

You can enjoy the library at home.

It is difficult to go to the library ... For such people, there is an e-book service that allows you to enjoy reading anytime and anywhere via the Internet.
It can be used by those who live, work, or attend school in Yokohama City and have a library card. There is also a special page of books recommended by librarians.
There is also a digital archive called Yokohama's Memory, which collects valuable materials related to Yokohama from the Yokohama City Library. You can enjoy a lot of materials such as ukiyo-e, maps, and postcards from the Internet.
Please use it at home time.

What kind of library is Chuo-toshokan?

Chuo-toshokan is the largest library in the 18th ward. Located on the hillside of Nogezaka, it is a five-story building with a six-square shape that fits the terrain. It holds 1.7 million books, one of the nation's leading three-story basement archives. The floor is divided according to the theme, and it has a wide range of materials from introductory books to specialized books.
Many books are collected in Chuo-toshokan every day, sorted and transported to other libraries and to each library. On this day, containers containing a large number of books were transported by seven trucks.

We look forward to seeing you.

On each floor, there is also a corner that summarizes materials on specific themes such as "medical and health information" and "legal information" to make it easier to find materials, and a search tool called a pathfinder.
In addition, there are elaborate exhibitions so that the librarian at the counter can help you with research and enjoy reading more.
Guided by an easy-to-understand arrangement, your hands reach out to books that you do not usually read, expanding the possibilities of reading.

Yeah

In the days when I could find anything on the internet, the librarian told me:
"The Internet seems to be able to find everything, and there are many things that are only listed in books. I hope you can make good use of both."
"There is also a reference service where librarians can help reading and research. Please feel free to rely on the library."
In Chuo-toshokan, PCs can be brought in on the 3rd, 4th and 1st basement floors, and there are floors that support Free Wi-Fi.
Care is taken so that students can learn using both books and the Internet.
Why don't you enjoy encountering new reading at the library this summer?
