July issue Local report on land related to Kamakura period

Yokohama, where the Kamakura Highway passes, there are many historical sites and legends that extend the Kamakura period. This time, I visited places related to Kanazawa Ward and Asahi Ward, where there are many historical sites and temples and shrines derived from the characters of the taiga drama "The 13 People of Kamakura-den".

Last update date July 1, 2022

Kanazawa Ward

The first place I visited was Seto Shrine.
It is a very convenient location, just a 2-minute walk from Kanazawa Hakkei Station on the Keikyu Line and Seaside Line.

Originally, this area was a difficult place for maritime traffic, so it seemed to have been worshiping the sea god. It is said that the beginning of Seto Shrine was that when Yoritomo Minamoto raised his army, he recommended Izu Mishima Myojin who prayed for victory.
Here, it is said to have been used by Yoritomo Minamoto's child, Sanetomo Minamotono and dedicated by his mother, Masako Hojo. Many valuable cultural assets handed down since the Kamakura period are preserved.

Next, we visited Biwajima Shrine on the opposite side of Seto Shrine.
As "Biwajima", it is a shrine where an island is built under the sea and is built there.

It is reported that when Yoritomo Minamoto built Seto Shrine, his wife, Masako Hojo followed it and recommended Chikubushima Benzaiten in Lake Biwa, which he had been worshiping on a daily basis.

Asahi Ward

In Asahi Ward, there are many places related to Shigetada Hatakeyama, a warlord who was active in the Kamakura period.
The first thing I visited was the Shigetada Hatakeyama Monument, which was erected to commemorate the 750th anniversary of Shigetada Hatakeyama, located near the Asahi Ward Office, about a 7-minute walk from Tsurugamine Station on the Sotetsu Line.

When Shigetada hits the arrow, this "Sakasa Yatake" says, "If you are correct, make this arrow and grow branches and leaves in this arrow." It is said that it grew by two each year and continued to grow.
(Until the mid-1940s, it was said that it had grown on the bank on the northeast side of the Asahi Ward government office, but since it disappeared, it has been planted again at its current location.)

In addition, there is also "Shuzuka" near the Asahi Ward Office, where Shigetada's head was cut off by Aiko (Aiko), Saburo, and Takataka Taka.

And the last one we visited was Yakuoji.
Here, there is "Rokutsuzuka", which is said to have buried 134 Clan Party members, including Shigetada.

Six mounds in the precincts

In addition, Shigetada is enshrined at Yakuoji, a sacred temple, and a memorial service is held every year on June 22, the anniversary of his death.

In addition, Asahi Ward is dotted with places related to Shigetada Hatakeyama, which is popular in the area.
In addition, among "Asahi's gem", which has been recommended by Asahi Ward, products related to Shigetada are selected as "Shigetada brand".

Going around the land of connection

This time, by visiting the land related to the Kamakura period, I was able to learn about a different aspect of Yokohama again. In addition to the introduction, there are many historical sites and stories in Yokohama City that extend the Kamakura period. Why don't you walk around the town while thinking about the Kamakura period?
