November issue “Yokohama Marine Tower” Renewal Local Report
The Yokohama Marine Tower, which had been temporarily closed since 2019, was reopened in September. This time, we interviewed the new highlights of the reborn Yokohama Marine Tower on site.
Last Updated November 1, 2022
Overview of Yokohama Marine Tower
Yokohama Marine Tower opened in 1961 as part of the 100th anniversary project of Yokohama Port, aiming to become a symbol of Yokohama Port. The tower with a height of 106m and a diagonal structure functioned as a lighthouse until September 1, 2008, and continued to watch Yokohama Port. It is popular as a spot where you can overlook the harbor and city area from the observation floor.
Points of renewal
Based on the concept of "NATURE & FUTURE", there are highlights that aim to be a place where people, things, and things gather naturally and talk with peace of mind.
Green environment connected to the city and connected to people
In the outdoor open square, green exterior walls and well-organized gardens create a sense of unity with the surrounding environment, including Yamashita Park, and welcome visitors with gentle greenery. The greening of the wall is planted in a form that mixes seasonal flowers, so it seems to show a different look depending on the season. On the day of the interview, there were many people taking pictures in front of the wall.
Also, in this square, various events such as music performances, kitchen cars, and Marche will be held, so it will be a place for people to relax.
Creative experience of a new era
On the observation floor, you can not only enjoy wonderful views, but also experience art at the Media Art Gallery, where you can enjoy the scenery and video works by superimposing it. The changing images and the fresh expressions of the night view of Yokohama one after another, had the fun of taking pictures crazy.
In addition, the lighting design of the tower itself has been renewed, and 230 LED fixtures have been adopted, and the silhouette of the tower can be expressed only with high brightness flashing lighting to achieve more advanced light production.
In the future, lighting up will be developed in line with the art illumination event "Yornoyo" in Yokohama, so I'm looking forward to it.
Library of Travel & Community Lounge
An exhibition of art works that change every season, a collection of photographs related to Yokohama, a library of architecture, urban theory, novels, records, CDs, etc. is set up, and you can learn about "Yokohama" from various angles. There were a lot of nostalgic "Yokohama". In addition, select furniture is also installed, so you can spend time relaxing as if you were living in a house.
In addition, the Yokohama goods "Yokohama 001", the "Marine Tower Shop", which has original goods of Yokohama Marine Tower, etc., the desk of the "City Guide Association" which guides the area with historical elements and new information, and the renewal It was full of fun attractions such as a restaurant that was renewed with the opportunity.
When I talked to the person in charge of Yokohama Marine Tower, "I would like various people to come from afar as a sightseeing spot, and I would like local people to come casually." In particular, the creative video production on the night view floor is popular and is recommended, as visitors are sending it on SNS. Also, through the library and lounge on the second floor, I would like you to rediscover the charm of Yokohama such as sightseeing, culture, and history. "
Not only those who want to know Yokohama from now on, but also those who are already familiar with Yokohama can enjoy the new Yokohama, why not visit it once?
