Procedures for reinterment (movement of ashes)

Transferring ashes that have already been buried or stored to another graveyard or ossuary is called "reinterment." For reinterment, procedures in accordance with the provisions of the "Law Concerning Cemeteries, Burials, etc. (Tomb Burning Law)" are required.

Main procedures, flow, and necessary items

This is an example of reinterment of ashes from graveyards that are currently buried or stored to new graveyards.

1. Decide the graveyard to be newly buried and stored

We decide where to reinterment by purchasing a new graveyard.

2. Obtain "Reinterment Permit Application"

The application for reinterment permit will be at the municipal office where the current graveyard is located.
If you have a current graveyard in Yokohama City, you can get the style in the following way.

3. Receive “Proof of Buried”

You will receive a "burial certificate" from the manager of the current graveyard.
Normally, the burial certificate is certified by the graveyard manager in the designated column of the reinterment permit application. (The style specified by the graveyard manager may be used.)

Notes

  • To confirm the current graveyard user, a "cemetery use permit" may be required.
  • If the graveyard user and the applicant are different, a power of attorney or written consent created by the graveyard user is required.
  • A fee may be required to issue a certificate of burial. Please check with the graveyard manager.

4.Apply for a reinterment permit

Necessary items for the procedure (when applying to Yokohama City)

  • Reinterment permission application (including "burial certificate") obtained in 2 and 3
  • (If the graveyard user and the applicant are different) Power of Attorney or written consent of the graveyard user

How to apply

When applying at the counter

Bring the above necessary items to the municipal office where the current graveyard is located (in the case of Yokohama City, the ward office Family Registry Division), apply, and receive a "reinterment permit".

When applying by mail

Please mail the following to the ward office Family Registry Division Family Registry Section where the current graveyard is located.

  • "Required for Procedure" (Please be sure to specify the Phone number that can be contacted during the day in the reinterment permit application.)
  • Reply envelope with a stamp stating Address

Costs of reinterment permits (fees)

Free of charge

5.Removal of ashes

Present the reinterment permit to managers such as the current graveyard and remove the remains (in that case, you will not give the reinterment permit. You will need it in a new graveyard.)

6.Buried and stored in new graveyards

You can submit a reinterment permit to managers such as new graveyards and bury and store ashes.

Notes

"Cemetery use permit" of new graveyard and "report of burial" (style that manager establishes) may be necessary. Please check with the manager of the new graveyard in advance.

Important matters other than procedures

What I explained here is a general procedure.
In addition, regarding local customs and rules by graveyard managers, such as restrictions on gravestones, we recommend that you check in advance the area where ashes are buried, the graveyard manager, and the new graveyard manager and local information. You.
It is also necessary to have a discussion with your relatives before starting the procedure.
