What is Appearance Care?
Appearance (appearance) care is a word created by the National Cancer Center Central Hospital Appear-Related Patient Support Team (2005-2012, now Appearance Support Center). Refers to the care performed by Rather than simply returning to the pre-changed appearance, we will support you to adjust the surrounding environment and the patient's feelings along with the appearance so that you can live like yourself.
A study conducted by the National Cancer Center found that physical symptoms in the appearance are causing pain to patients undergoing anticancer drugs than expected by healthcare professionals. As the number of people who work and housework while receiving treatment is increasing, it is often difficult for social life, such as changing appearance makes it difficult to meet people due to changes in appearance. It is important to connect society.
Initiatives for Appearance Care in Yokohama City
I would like to introduce the initiatives related to Appearance Care implemented in Yokohama.
Leaflet on Appearance Care
We have created two types of leaflets for those who perform surgery for "head and neck cancers in the head and neck where surgery is noticeable, such as the face and neck" and "breast cancer".
If the head and neck surgery is said to have a large scratch on the face or neck, it is described how to deal with scratches and deformation. Explains how to answer when asked, "What happened?" And how to cover using familiar items.
It describes the underwear that can be used immediately after surgery for breast cancer and how to adjust the appearance after surgery, and briefly explains the types of pads and how to select them. In addition, in order to spread understanding of male breast cancer patients, the experiences of male patients are also posted.
