Honkakuji Temple (Hongakuji)
Last Updated March 12, 2021
At the time of the opening of the port, Honkaku-ji Temple was devoted to the American Consulate. It is said that Dorah, who was a Kanagawa consul, cut off the pine branches in the garden and raised a star and flag on this tree. In addition, it is said that the main temple of this temple was covered with a board enclosure, the mountain gate was painted with white paint, and the general public was prohibited from entering.
At the time of the conclusion of the Japan-U.S. Osamu's Good Trade Treaty, a stone monument has been built on the grounds to commemorate Tadanari Iwase, a full-rights committee member, who negotiated with the US Minister Harris. (Published in Kanagawa-juku History Pamphlet)
