Reorganization and enhancement of functions
Last update date February 2, 2019
Why is reorganization and enhancement of functions required?
Since its opening in 1931, Yokohama City Central Wholesale Market has been an essential facility for the dietary habits of citizens.
But now, wholesale markets across the country are facing various challenges.
1. Market transaction volume decreased due to an increase in direct sales from production areas and Internet transactions.
2. In addition, in the consumer life style, in addition to eating out, “meal meals”, which eats cooked foods such as prepared foods and processed foods at home, has become established.
3. In addition, there are frequent incidents that have shaken food safety, and consumers are more interested in food safety and security.
Therefore, in Yokohama City, in order to continue opening and operating the Central Wholesale Market in the future while addressing these issues with limited financial resources, it is necessary to integrate the home and the southern market where major handling items overlap. In July 2010, we formulated the "Basic Policy on Reorganization and Function Enhancement of Yokohama Market" (PDF: 227KB), and it was decided to reorganize the home and southern markets and strengthen the market functions.
For detailed progress and materials up to the basic policy formulation, please see the process up to the basic policy formulation.
