Necessity of reorganization and enhancement of functions
Last Updated February 2, 2019
Why is it necessary to reorganize and strengthen functions?
The Yokohama Central Wholesale Market has been an indispensable facility for the diet of citizens since its opening in 1931.
However, at present, there are various issues in the wholesale market nationwide.
1. Market transaction volume declined due to an increase in direct delivery of production areas and Internet transactions.
2. In the consumer life style, in addition to eating out, “meal meals”, which eats cooked foods such as side dishes and processed foods at home, have become established.
3. In addition, there have been frequent incidents that disrupt food safety, and consumers' interest in food safety and security is increasing.
Therefore, in order to continue the establishment and operation of the Central Wholesale Market while addressing these issues with limited financial resources, it is necessary to integrate the home and the southern market where major items handled overlap, In July 2010, we formulated the "Basic Policy on Reorganization and Function Enhancement of the Yokohama Market" (PDF: 227KB), reorganized the home and southern markets, and decided to strengthen the functions of the market.
For details on the progress and materials up to the basic policy formulation, see the process up to the basic policy formulation.
