Last updated March 15, 2024

Illustration of a folk tale of "Tanuki's Badger"

Once upon a time, Kitsuneyama in Futatsubashimura was dark in the daytime, where the trees were so thick that various animals lived.
One of them, Gonbei Tanuki, who is not easy to transform, is always out of his friends, and Yajiemon, a peasant who acts as a village outside the village. When I entered the kitchen, I was getting food. This Gonbei Tanger always comes to Yajiemon's house at night.
"Mr. Yajiemon, Yajiemon!"
He imitated the voice of Genbei, the master (Nannushi), hit the shutter.
Yajiemon thinks that he is really a master, and when he opens the door and looks outside, no one can see anyone. I went to bed, thinking that it was because of my mind, and again
"Mr. Yajiemon, Yajiemon."
There is a sound of knocking on the shutter. He hurriedly opened the door and looked out, and I saw the back of the raccoon dog. While repeating this, Yajiemon and Gonbei Tanuki became friends someday.
One year later, the fire broke out from the back of Yajiemon. Gonbei Tanuki, who found this, waving his thick tail, and loudly.
"Yajiemon, Yajiemon Saon!"
And knocked down the shutters of Yajiemon's house.
I was surprised at the unusual state of Gonbei raccoon and jumped out, and it was a fire. Mr. Yajiemon, who shouted out the fire in the neighborhood and put it out, and became more friendly than before thanks to Gonbei Tanuki that he did not burn the important documents that he had safely kept his house safely.
Yajiemon also grew older one day and suddenly fell on a serious illness.
One day he called his son Hirotaro, as a bedside.
"Gonbei Tanuki, who beats the shutters at home every night, is a long friend. It's a benefit of protecting the house from fire, so please keep it forever. "
And he took his breath. The Lord Gonbei Tanuki calls has been changed from Yajiemon to Kotaro.
One autumn evening, Gonbei Tanuki found a fire in the village. I forgot to ghost and ran to inform Kotaro's house, but when I approached, the house was completely wrapped in fire.
Gonbei raccoon, who jumped into the fire, caught Yajiemon's tile firmly on his large tummy, fell down and breathed. Since then, this healthy Gonbei Tanger has long been told as a narrative of the villagers, saying, "I'll give you a wonderful return with animals."
