Procedure for abolition of private graveyard

Overview
Reinterment permission and graveyard abolition permission are necessary to abolish private graveyard.

Person who is going to abolish private graveyard
※If the applicant is different from the graveyard user, it is necessary to attach a document showing the relationship with the graveyard user.
Main Procedures and Flows
This is an example of abolishing the graveyard after reintermenting all ashes from the graveyard to be abolished to a new graveyard.
※If you have already been reburied and do not have a copy of your reinterment permit, you may need to dig a graveyard. For more information, please contact Medical Care Bureau Health Sanitation Division.
1. Reinterment permission application
We perform reinterment permission application in ward office Family Registry Division of ward where graveyard is located. For more information, please refer to the page of procedures for reinterment.
※Please keep a copy of the reinterment permit as graveyards will be required for abolition permission applications.

2. Reinterment
Take out the remains from the current cemetery, submit a reinterment permit to the manager of the graveyard at the reinterment location, and bury and store the remains.
3. Removal of tombstones, leveling, etc.
Please make the land vacant once by removing or leveling the gravestones of the graveyard to be abolished.
※When excavating a cemetery, please record that the remains have not been buried or buried.
4. Prior consultation on abolition permission application
After reinterment and before applying for the abolition permit, please consult with Medical Care Bureau Health Sanitation Division for details of procedures for abolition.

Please submit abolition permission application such as graveyards and attached documents to ward office Health Sanitation Division window of ward where graveyard to abolish is located.

6. Permission to abolish graveyards
After the abolition permission decision, graveyards will issue abolition permission notices at the same ward office Health Sanitation Division window as at the time of application.
