Installation of a disposer

Last update date April 1, 2024

Because of the beautiful sea and river, let's use the disposer according to the rules!

What kind of thing is a disposer?

The following equipment is installed under the drain of the kitchen to crush the kitchen garbage, such as vegetable waste generated during cooking, and then flow it to the sewer pipe together with water.

Type of disposer
Single disposer
(direct input type disposer)
Drain the crushed kitchen garbage together with the drainage to the sewer.
Disposer wastewater treatment system (biological treatment type) Non-consolidated disposer + wastewater treatment tank
The kitchen garbage and kitchen wastewater crushed by the disposer are treated in a wastewater treatment tank before flowing into the sewer.
Disposer wastewater treatment system (mechanical treatment type) Non-consolidated disposer + drying device
The kitchen garbage crushed by the disposer is separated into solids and water.
Water is drained into the sewer, and solids are processed by a drying device for collection of burnable garbage.

Disposers can cause clogging or damage to drainage facilities and sewer pipes in their homes if the installation method and maintenance are not appropriate.
In addition, since it has a bad effect on the water environment such as the sea and rivers, Yokohama City has established the following rules for the installation of disposers.

Be careful when installing a disposer.

We ask that you do not install the disposer alone.
A single disposer has the following problems.

  • Crushed objects tend to accumulate in the sewer pipe, which may interfere with maintenance such as cleaning.
  • When a lot of rain falls, the crushed kitchen garbage can flow into rivers and seas.
  • Since not only ordinary sewage but also crushed kitchen garbage flows in, the water reclamation center, which treats sewage, may be burdened, making it difficult to secure water quality and treat sludge.

"Disposer wastewater treatment system that can be installed" can be confirmed on the website of the Japan Sewerage Association (outside site).
The Disposer Wastewater Treatment System, which has been evaluated and product certified according to the “Disposer Wastewater Treatment System Performance Standards for Sewerage (Draft) (March 2013)”, has the certification specified by the Japan Sewerage Association. Mark is displayed.

Maintenance and management of disposer wastewater treatment system

It is important for the disposer wastewater treatment system to perform proper maintenance.
In order to ensure that the wastewater from the disposer wastewater treatment system does not exceed the standard, we conclude a maintenance and management contract with a specialized contractor and prepare a maintenance plan, etc., perform periodic inspection and cleaning, water quality inspection, and sludge treatment (withdrawing) etc. please.
In addition, the treatment of sludge generated from the biological treatment type disposer wastewater treatment system should be entrusted to a licensed contractor based on Article 7 of the Waste Management and Public Cleansing Law.
