About the installation of disposer

Last update date April 1, 2024

Because of the beautiful sea and river, let's use disposers according to the rules!

What kind of disposer is it?

A device that is installed under the kitchen drain to finely crush kitchen garbage such as vegetable waste generated during cooking, and flows it to the sewer pipe together with water. There are the following types:

Type of Disposer
Non-consolidated disposer
(Direct input type disposer)
The crushed kitchen garbage is drained into the sewer as it is.
Disposer wastewater treatment system (biological treatment type) Non-consolidated disposer + wastewater treatment tank
kitchen garbage and kitchen wastewater crushed by the disposer are treated in a wastewater treatment tank and then drained into the sewer.
Disposer wastewater treatment system (machinery treatment type) Non-consolidated disposer + drying equipment
Separate the kitchen garbage crushed by the disposer into solids and moisture.
Moisture is drained into the sewer, and solids are treated with a drying device to collect burnable garbage.

If the disposer is not properly installed and maintained, the disposer may cause clogging or damage to drainage facilities and sewer pipes in the house.
In addition, Yokohama City has established the following rules regarding the installation of disposers, as it will have a bad effect on the water environment such as the sea and rivers.

Be careful when installing a disposer.

We ask that you do not install the disposer on your own.
A single disposer has the following problems.

  • The crushed material easily accumulates in the sewer pipe, which may interfere with maintenance such as cleaning.
  • In sewer pipes (merging pipes) that drain sewage and rainwater together, when heavy rain falls, the crushed kitchen garbage may flow into rivers and the sea.
  • Not only ordinary sewage, but also crushed kitchen garbage flows in, which places a burden on the water recycling center that treats sewage, making it difficult to secure water quality and treat sludge.

"Disposer wastewater treatment system that can be installed" can be confirmed on the homepage (outside site) of the Japan Sewerage Association (Public Corporation).
The “Disposer Wastewater Treatment System”, which has been evaluated and product certification based on the “Disposer Wastewater Treatment System Performance Standards for Sewerage (Draft) (March 2013)”, is certified by the Japan Sewerage Association. Mark is displayed.

Procedures for installing a disposer wastewater treatment system

Since the disposer wastewater treatment system is treated as one of the drainage facilities, submit a drainage system plan confirmation application and documents related to the system to each ward Public Works Office in advance to determine whether the construction conforms to laws and regulations. Maintenance and management of disposer wastewater treatment systems

It is important to maintain and manage the disposer wastewater treatment system properly.
In order to ensure that wastewater from the disposer wastewater treatment system does not exceed the standard, conclude a maintenance and management contract with a specialized contractor, prepare a maintenance plan, etc., and conduct periodic inspections and cleaning, water quality inspections, sludge treatment (drawing), etc. please.
In addition, the treatment of sludge generated from the biological treatment type disposer wastewater treatment system should be entrusted to a licensed company under Article 7 of the Waste Management and Public Cleansing Law.
