Foreign Residents in Japan and Japanese nationals residing overseas

Foreigners also join the National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin).

As a general rule, National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) is a member of the Address who is between 20 and 60 years old, regardless of nationality. You can apply for membership at the ward office where Address is registered.
※However, foreigners will not be able to join National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) once the Address disappears from Japan. In addition, the period of residence abroad is not included in the total period of the basic retirement pension.

Those who have naturalized or permanent residence permit

For foreigners who have naturalized or permanent residence in Japan, the following period will be included in the total period of 20 to 60 years old.

  1. Period of residing as a foreigner from April 1961 to December 1981
  2. The period from April 1961 to the day before the date of acquisition of Japanese nationality, etc.

There is a lump-sum withdrawal system for foreigners who have paid insurance premiums but have returned home without eligibility. If a foreigner who has paid National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) or who has been enrolled in Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin) for more than 6 months and is unable to receive pension make a claim within two years of leaving Japan. Procedures will be sent by mail to the Japan pension Organization.

Social Security Agreement

The Social Security Agreement aims to prevent the double burden of insurance premiums by adjusting the pension plans to be enrolled in the pensionpension in the country. For more information, please visit the websites of the Japan pension Organization (external site) or the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (external site).

When you move abroad, you can choose to stop National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) once or continue to voluntarily subscribe. This is different if you join voluntarily.

If you are a member of Japanese nationals residing overseas (excluding No. 2 and No. 3 insured persons) who are 20 years old or older and under 65 years old, please notify us.

  • When there are relatives (parents, children, siblings, etc.) in Japan
    The relatives will be the collaborators.
