Outline of the National Pension System

Last update date April 12, 2023

What is National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin)?

National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) is a system in which all persons receive basic pension benefits throughout their lives. This is a system in which everyone pays insurance premiums in advance and supports each other economically so that our lives will not be impaired by elderly people or unexpected accidents.
National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) means that all self-employed persons, students, Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin) and their spouses, all join and receive basic pension benefits.

Based on the basic pension plan, a two-story pension system

pension is comprised of National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin), which provides a common basic pension for all employees, including students aged 20 and over, self-employed employees, employees and their spouses, and the Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin), which provides pension in proportion to compensation.
If you are old, you will receive a basic pension for the old age, Disability Basic Pension if you have a disability, and a survivor's basic pension will be paid. In addition, if you are a member of Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin), the old age Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin), disability welfare pension, and survivor's pension will be added.

The basic pension number is the key number for managing your pension membership record. The Japan pension Organization, in principle, manages the records of enrollment in pension with a single basic pension number.

What is the basic pension number notice?

From April 2022, pension has issued a Basic Pension Number Notice to those who wish to re-issue the pension plan or wish to reissue it due to loss of the pension notebook, etc., instead of the previous pension notebook. (If you already have the pension notebook, you will not be issued a "Basic Pension Number Notice", so please keep the pension Notebook.)
If the National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) No. 1 insured person or voluntary insured wishes to reissue the Basic Pension Number Notification due to loss of the pension Notebook or Basic Pension Number Notification, etc., please complete the procedures at the pension Office in charge of Address.
