Overview of the National Pension System

Last Updated April 12, 2023

What is National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin)?

National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) is a system in which all people receive basic pensions throughout their lives. This is a system in which everyone pays insurance premiums in advance and supports each other economically so that our lives are not impaired due to the elderly or unexpected accidents.
In National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin), self-employed persons, students, Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin) members and their spouses all join and receive basic pensions.

Based on basic pensions, a two-story pension system

The public pension consists of National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin), which provides a common basic pension to all students aged 20 and over, self-employed employees, employees and their spouses, and the Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin), which provides a compensation-proportional pension based on an employee's basic pension.
If you are old, you will receive an old age basic pension, if you have a disability, Disability Basic Pension, and if you have a living, you will receive a survivor's basic pension. If you are a member of the Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin), you will be added to the old age Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin), disability welfare pension, and survivors' welfare pension.

The basic pension number is the key number to manage your pension subscription record. In principle, the Japan pension Organization manages the records of one customer's participation in pension with one basic pension number.

What is the Basic Pension Number Notice?

Since April 2022, those who are newly enrolled in the pension system or wish to reissue due to the loss of the pension Notebook, etc., have been issued by the pension Japan Organization instead of the previous pension Notebook. (If you already have a pension notebook, you will not be issued a "Basic Pension Number Notice", so please keep the pension notebook.)
If the National Pension Plan (Kokumin Nenkin) No. 1 insured or voluntary insured wishes to reissue the Basic Pension Number Notification due to loss of the pension Notebook or Basic Pension Number Notification, please go to the pension Office in charge of the Address area.
