Last update date April 1, 2023

Prospects of supply of Japanese Encephalitis vaccine

The shipment volume of Japanese Encephalitis vaccine was adjusted during FY2021 due to the suspension of production by the manufacturer. As of January 2023, limited shipments (shipping adjustment) from manufacturers have been completed, and we have been able to supply adequate amount of vaccine.
Japanese Encephalitis vaccine can be inoculated at public expense until [1st term (3 times in total): less than 7 years and 6 months], [2nd term (once): under 13 years old].
First of all, check the vaccination history of the Maternal and Child Health Handbook, and if there is an unvaccinated portion, please consider vaccination.

What is Japanese Encephalitis?

It is caused by infection with the Japanese Encephalitis virus. Viruses that have increased in the body, such as pigs, rather than directly from humans, are transmitted and transmitted by mosquitoes.
After an incubation period of 7 to 10 days, you develop acute encephalitis with symptoms such as high fever, headache, vomiting, impaired consciousness, and convulsions.
The epidemic in Japan is mainly in the West Japan region, but the virus is distributed throughout Japan.
The epidemic of Japanese Encephalitis in domestic pigs lasts from June to October every year. During this period, more than 80% of pigs are infected.
Previously, it occurred in children and schoolchild, but it has decreased due to the spread of Vaccinations. Recently, cases have occurred mainly in elderly people who have not been vaccinated.
Outside of the country, the epidemic is currently seen in South Asia, such as India, and Southeast Asia.
The majority of infections are asymptomatic, but one in 100 to 1,000 people develop encephalitis.
If the disease develops, the patient's mortality rate is 20-40%, and 45-70% of those who survive have sequelae such as paralysis.

How to Vaccinations

Using dry cell culture Japanese Encephalitis vaccine, we inoculate as follows.

[Standard Schedule] (1st term: 6 months to less than 90 months after birth / 2nd term: 9 to 13 years old)

(1) After inoculation of "first term (1)", we inoculate "first term (2)" at intervals of 6 to 28 days.
(2) After "1st term first (2)" inoculation, we inoculate "1 additional term" approximately one year later.
(3) After "1 additional term" inoculation, we inoculate "the second term" approximately five years later.
