Initiatives in Yokohama, an environmentally advanced city full of flowers and greenery triggered by the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games
Last Updated April 9, 2024
“Environmentally advanced city full of flowers and greenery” What is the approach of Yokohama?
In the area surrounding Yokohama International Stadium and Yokohama Stadium, which will be the venue for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, we are developing a variety of advanced environmental initiatives, including the maintenance of flower beds and street trees, the use of rain gardens, sewage reclaimed water, and the use of clean electricity through wind power generation.
In working with various people, such as related ward bureaus and local communities and groups, we linked to the creation of an environmental space full of charm and liveliness.
Initiatives in the area around Yokohama International Stadium
Color and bustling with flowers and greenery
On the main streets that serve as the flow line to the stadium, flowers and greenery create gorgeousness.
- Color the street with flowers of colors that match the core graphics "Red" set for each stadium.
- Color the streets with a Japanese atmosphere, such as bamboo fences (fourth fences) and tsuboiwa-style decorations.
- Using wooden boxes and obelisks, create a three-dimensional effect on the flowerbed and color the street.
- A three-dimensional street with a hanging basket (76), a container flower bed (41), a large container flower bed (6), a standing hanging (15), a flower tower (7), and a flower wagon (1) Color the street.
- Color the stadium using flower towers and large container flower beds.

Greening as the main focus of the area
Shin-Yokohama Neighborhood Associations took the lead in forming the “Garden City Shin-Yokohama Project Team of the Neighborhood Associations Beautification Environment Department of Shin-Yokohama” and working on greening the walls of the Shin-Yokohama Square Building. Taking advantage of the high visibility of the wall greening, it is used as the starting point for bustling production.
In addition, container flower beds are installed on private land to create a green atmosphere throughout the city.

Installation of rain gardens to capture and store rainwater
Rain gardens (*) of different types are installed, each with 11 locations on Stadium Street, 2 locations on Shin-Yokohama Chuo-dori, and 16 locations on F. Marinos Street.

Installation of information plates for the details of the initiatives
A guide plate was set up on June 29 to inform the details of the activities around the stadium. We have set up six locations in the area to send out initiatives to visitors.

Use LED lighting at Yokohama International Stadium
- We use LED lighting for competition to ensure illuminance that meets Olympic standards. As a result, it is possible to produce powerful lighting with a sense of realism integrated with the sound.
- Compared to existing lighting, energy saving is achieved by about 35%.
- Light-up lighting outside the venue is full-colored, enabling lighting in various colors, and it can also function as a local landmark that adds color to the city by producing seasonal expressions.

The bustle of the design manhole
The British national team is conducting a pre-camp at the Yokohama International Pool. Under the slogan "GO GB," Yokohama City is providing support for the British national team to perform best.
At the same time, on July 8, 10 GO GB design manholes were installed around Kitayamada Station.

Initiatives in the area around Yokohama Stadium
In the Yokohama Stadium area, during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, under the theme of “Approach to the World through the Sea,” we are promoting initiatives to connect Yokohama Park, Nihon Odori Avenue, and Yamashita Park with flowers and greenery.
In order to keep up with the summer heat, we make use of the results of the demonstration experiment of the summer flowerbed conducted since 2019 and color it with flowers and greenery.
Yokohama Park flowers and greens (7/23-8/9 are not allowed in Yokohama Park)
At Yokohama Park, the theme is "intercultural exchange through flowers."
- The area near the entrance is a hospitality garden with a vivid color scheme to create a welcome feeling.
- We are conscious of the distribution of images, etc., and we are devising the arrangement of flowers so that they can be seen beautifully when viewed from high places such as stadiums.

Flower and green of Nihon Odori Avenue
At Nihon Odori Avenue, the theme is "Approach to the World through the Sea."
- Focusing on spots where you want to stop your feet, such as waiting for traffic lights at intersections and near the shade of trees that avoid sunlight, the streets that are fun in summer are created to create coolness using flowers.
- Various types of morning glory and bamboo pillars are installed to express the summer tradition of Japan.
Flower and green of Yamashita Park
In Yamashita Park, the theme is "The hospitality of the history and culture of Yokohama, a port town."
- Based on the concept of "a beach shaped like a park" and "a place to enter and exit while showing Japanese traditions", it combines summer flowers in Japan and cool summer colors in Western Europe.
- Please enjoy a variety of flower competitions against the backdrop of the sea
Initiatives common to both areas
Flower beds in cooperation with employment support facilities for persons with disabilities
In cooperation with employment support facilities for persons with disabilities, flower beds have been set up in each area to create gorgeousness and liveliness.
- Shin-Yokohama Station North Exit Station Square
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic PR flowerbed has been set up and maintained at employment support facilities for persons with disabilities.
- Shin-Yokohama Ekimae Park
We color flower beds with flowers and greenery, and replant and maintain flowers at employment support facilities for persons with disabilities.
- Yokohama Park
The flowerbeds set up during the garden necklace were taken over and maintained at employment support facilities for persons with disabilities. (until July 12)

Use sewage reclaimed water for watering flowers and greenery
It contributes to the formation of a water cycle by utilizing sewage reclaimed water (*) to water flowers and greenery in the area.
(※) Most of the sewage treatment water that has been treated as sewage at the Water Reclamation Center is discharged to the sea and rivers, but some are subject to sand filtration and ozone treatment, etc. It is used for many applications such as water for scenic water, toilet washing water, and miscellaneous water.
The sewage reclaimed water used for watering is filtered with sand to further remove invisible fine dirt, and then sterilized with an ozone disinfection facility.

High-quality maintenance
The flower beds and planting belts maintained this time are managed integrally. By maintaining and managing from a long-term perspective with a view to the growth of flowers and greenery and the growth of street trees, we will create an attractive space with green flowers.
Creating an environment that overcomes heat
- We arranged the shape of the street trees and carried out pruning such as leaving many branches so that the shade of greenery increases. By creating shades of trees, direct sunlight is blocked and the heat is alleviated.
- In cooperation with the demonstration experiment of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, arched and bench-type heat mitigation facilities have been installed at Shin-Yokohama Ekimae Park. Mists are installed in arched facilities to reduce the heat.
- The ground of the East Gate Bridge of Yokohama International Stadium is paved to reduce the heat due to reflection.
- A fractal sunshade (a special-structured sunshade) has been installed in the Yokohama International Stadium to create cool spots.

Renewable electricity from the Yokohama Wind Power Plant
During the tournament, the electricity used at both venues will be converted to renewable energy using the Green Power Certificate (*) created at Hamawing, Yokohama Wind Power Station.
(※) Green Power Certification System
A system in which "environmental added value" of clean electricity generated by natural energy such as wind and solar power is converted into "certificate" and traded. A system in which power used for a specific period or place can be deemed to have been used by renewable energy by using a certificate.

Introduction of local production for local consumption support stores
Around both venues, restaurants in the city are engaged in local production for local consumption by actively incorporating agricultural and livestock products such as fresh seasonal vegetables, fruits, eggs, and "Hamapaku" from Yokohama into the menu. Introducing
