Along with the library school "Three Cultural Resources Lost in the Great Kanto Earthquake" (scheduled to be held on August 3, 2019), Chuo-toshokan will exhibit materials focusing on Yokohama culture prior to the Great Kanto Earthquake.
Yokohama, which opened with the arrival of Perry, various cultures were built by the Taisho period. However, many cultural bases were lost due to the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The Goethe Theater, where cultural activities centered on music, the playhouse, one of the cultures of the common people, and the Noh Theater in Iseyama Shrine, were not rebuilt during the reconstruction.
In this exhibition, along with the chronology created by the museum, the facilities and buildings lost due to the earthquake, such as the playhouses, hotels, and Yokohama Station, which was the base of transportation, etc. We will introduce the situation through postcards and other materials owned by the museum. It is a content that citizens can know about Yokohama culture before the Great Kanto Earthquake.
