Photochemical smog occurs at a high concentration of photochemical oxidants, mainly in summer when the temperature is high and the amount of solar radiation is high. A photochemical smog advisory is issued every year in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and it is important to reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a major causative substance. In addition, the reduction of VOC emissions is considered to be effective in reducing microparticulate matter (PM2.5).
Nine prefectures (Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Yokohama, Kawasaki, Chiba, Saitama, and Sagamihara) have set June to September as part of measures against photochemical smog. We will set the priority implementation period for VOC measures, call on businesses and residents to reduce VOC emissions, and work to improve photochemical smog.
From June to September is the priority implementation period for "Summer VOC measures"! (PDF:572KB)
