Process of Measures for Abandoned Bicycles in Yokohama City

In the 1950s, abandoned bicycles became a problem nationwide due to the rapid increase in the use of bicycles, and Yokohama City began to consider solutions.
First, model district activities were carried out from 1958 to 1959. This is a model station in one ward and one station in one ward, and with the cooperation of local residents, we conducted activities to enact ordinances, such as publicity enlightenment and movement of long-term abandoned bicycles. Through these activities, we established the Ordinance for Prevention of Leaving in 1985, and designated a total of 36 stations, including 22 stations in October of the same year and 14 stations in November of the same year, and started its business.

Maintenance of bicycle parking lots

Yokohama City has been developing a municipal bicycle parking lot with a capacity of about 100,000 vehicles in order to prevent abandoned bicycles and improve the traffic environment that makes it easy to use bicycles. In addition, we carried out some subsidies for maintenance costs for private businesses and promoted bicycle parking measures.
Furthermore, as a measure against parking bicycles used by visitors to stores and residents such as apartment houses, when constructing or expanding customer facilities and apartment houses that generate demand for bicycle parking, the installation of bicycle parking lots is required. The ordinance was enacted in 2018 to promote the installation of bicycle parking lots with an appropriate number of vehicles.

Promotion of Bicycle Utilization

Self-transfer is a convenient and close vehicle that has less impact on the environment and leads to health promotion. In March 2019, Yokohama City formulated the "Yokohama City Self-Transfer Vehicle Use Promotion Plan" in March 2019, based on national trends and related plans, in order to promote the safety of both self-transfer vehicles and walkers, and to promote self-transfer use from the perspective of enriching their lives.
Based on this plan, we aim to create a bustling and migratory environment, and promote the creation of a self-transfer environment where everyone can enjoy safely and comfortably, from everyday to leisure.
