Historic Sites

Last Updated December 9, 2020

What is a historic site?

Among archeological sites, those that are indispensable for a correct understanding of Japan's history, and those of high academic value in the scale, archeological sites, excavated relics, etc. are called historical sites.

About construction in historic site designated site

In the city, there are historical sites such as the precincts of Shomei-ji Temple, the Sandendai archeological site, the Choinagiri-dori, and the Otsuka / Toshikatsudo archeological site.
In these historical sites, permission from the Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Board of Education is required when performing topographical changes such as building, remodeling, or embankment of land, etc., and a procedure for "application for permission to change the status quo" is required. If you change the status quo without permission or change the status quo without complying with the conditions of the permission, you may be punished by law (Article 197 of the Cultural Property Protection Law). In addition, it takes about three months for permission to be granted.
If you have the following plans, be sure to consult with the City of Yokohama, Board of Education Secretariat Lifelong Learning and Cultural Properties Division Cultural Property Section in advance.

Example of requiring a procedure to change the status quo
1 New construction, renovation, extension or removal of buildings
2 Topographic changes such as embankment and cut of land
3 Installation, renovation or removal of structures, pavement and repair of roads
4 Logging of wood and bamboo
5 Installation, renovation or removal of underground buried objects
6 Other acts that change the current status of historic sites or acts that affect the preservation of historic sites
