Information on the registration of museums based on the Museum Law and the designation of facilities equivalent to museums.

Matters related to the registered museum

What is a Registered Museum?

Collect, store, and display materials related to history, arts, folklore, industry, natural sciences, etc., for use by the general public with educational considerations, and to contribute to their culture, research, recreation, etc. Among institutions that aim to conduct research and research on these materials, those that have been registered under the Museum Law (Article 2 of the Museum Law).

About registration of facility located in the city, city Board of Education performs procedure.

※For facilities established by Kanagawa Prefecture, please consult with Kanagawa Prefecture.

③ Examination (including hearing of opinions and field surveys of persons with academic experience)
④ Listed and published in the museum registry

Please confirm the Museum Law Article 13, Paragraph 1 of the Museum Law, the detailed rules of the Museum Law stipulated by the City Board of Education, and the registration examination standards for museums.

Documents to be submitted for registration

Regular report of the Registered Museum

Registered museums, including museums registered under the provisions of Article 10 of the Old Museum Law, must make regular reports once a year between June 1 and the end of the same month.
However, if less than one year from the date of registration, you do not need to report for that year.

Procedures for changes and abolition after registration

If there are any changes to the registered items after receiving registration, a notification must be made within one month from the date of the change.
In addition, if the museum is abolished, a notification must be made within 10 days from the date of abolition.

Handling of museums registered by March 31, 2023

For museums that have been registered under the provisions of Article 10 of the Old Museum Law, from the date of enforcement of the revised law (April 1, 2023) until the date five years have elapsed (March 2028) Until 31), it is deemed to have been registered under Article 11 of the revised Museum Law.

Documents to be submitted required for designated application

Handling of facilities designated by March 31, 2023

Facilities that conduct business similar to museum business and that are currently designated under Article 29 of the Old Museum Law at the time of the enforcement of the revised law are designated under Article 31, Paragraph 1 of the revised Museum Law. Will be deemed to have been received.
