About designation of landscape important tree (Ginkgo along Nihon Odori)

Last Updated June 24, 2020

Nihon Odori Avenue is a tree-lined road that stretches straight to Zou-no-Hana-District, the port of Yokohama's opening, and the ginkgo along the road beautifully turns red every year to delight visitors, making it a place that is loved by citizens as a representative scenic spot in Yokohama.
Until now, many initiatives that take advantage of good landscapes, such as open cafes and events utilizing road space, have been carried out, but this time, a row of ginkgo trees (a total of 65 trees) along the road, which has become a symbol, has been designated as a landscape important tree based on the Landscape Act in order to preserve it for the future.

History of Nihon Odori Avenue

In response to the Great Fire of Keio 2 (1865), Nihon Odori Avenue is a 430-meter-long road designed to serve as a fire zone that separates Japanese towns and foreign settlements.
Historic buildings such as the Kanagawa Prefectural Government Building and the Yokohama Media and Communications Center (formerly Yokohama Commerce and Industry Promotion Center) are concentrated along the road, forming a street landscape that extends the history since its opening.
In addition, elephant nose park opened in 2009, and the outlook for the sea improved.
Meiji 12 (1879): Completed as a modern street designed by a foreign engineer Blanton
Showa 4 (1929): Completed reconstruction after the Great Kanto Earthquake. Ginkgo was also planted around this time.
2002: Completed redevelopment of sidewalk widening
