Watershed forests have the function of absorbing rainwater, purifying it into high-quality groundwater, adjust floods, and prevent sediment runoff and drought (water source recharge function).
Doshi Village, Minamitsuru-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture, where the Doshi River flows, the water source of Yokohama City. A village across the Tanzawa Massif to the north, there is a vast watershed forest owned by City of Yokohama, Water Works Bureau. Michishi Village is blessed with a lot of rainfall and rich forests, and the water quality of the Doshi River raised there is extremely good.
For more than 100 years since Yokohama City purchased a forest from Yamanashi Prefecture in 1616, Doshi Water Source Forest has played an important role in continuing to send water from the Doshi River, which has been praised as "do not rot even if it crosses the equator," to Yokohama citizens.
The area of the watershed forest owned by Yokohama City is 2,873ha, which accounts for about 36% of the total area of 7,968 hectares.
There are 762ha of artificial forests centered on cypress, 1,799ha of natural broadleaf trees such as beech and coniferous trees such as fir and tsuga, and 312ha of grassland and swamps.
Planted forests, which account for about 27% of the Doshi water source forests, reduce their water retention capacity if they are not properly maintained after tree planting. We manage with the aim of becoming a mixed mixed forest.
