Watershed forest thinning volunteer experience tour

On September 4, 2024 (Wednesday), we held a "Water Source Forest Thinning Volunteer Experience Tour" as an opportunity for students of partner universities to think deeply about the importance of "Water Source Forest conservation" and the water supply they use casually every day in Michishi Village, Yamanashi Prefecture, one of the water sources in Yokohama.
At first, they toured the watershed forest, and through lectures and experiments, they learned about the history of Yokohama City and Michishi Village and the role of the watershed forest (water source recharge function (* 1)).
In the subsequent thinning experience, under the guidance of an instructor of the NPO Law Humanitarian Shi Water Source Forest Volunteer Association (* 2), they actually experienced cutting cedar and cypress trees using tools such as saws. I got it.
At the last workshop of the tour, participants actively exchanged opinions with each other.

※1 Water source recharge function…
The water source forest absorbs plenty of rainwater, purifies it into high-quality groundwater, adjusts floods, and prevents sediment runoff and drought.
※2 NPO Law Humanitarian Water Source Forest Volunteer Association…
Based on the basic philosophy that "we drink water and water source forests are protected and nurtured by our citizens and passed on to the next generation," we are promoting conservation activities to regenerate the forest of Doshi. Click here for more information.

Examples of past initiatives

Ferris Jogakuin University (FY2022)

Through university classes, I learned about "Water Source Forest conservation" and created a pamphlet introducing "Doshi Water Source Forest".
In addition, we exhibited at "YOKOHAMA Save The Water 2022-Doshi Water Source Forest Connecting to the Future" and distributed pamphlets.
The situation of the day is introduced on the Ferris Jogakuin University website (outside site).
