A topographic map is a map that shows in detail the height and shape of nature and artifacts such as mountains and rivers on the ground surface. By comparing old and new maps in the same area, you can know changes such as land use.
Maps based on modern surveying were started by the Army Chief of Staff Headquarters in the early Meiji era, and were handed over to the Geographical Survey Institute via the Army Land Survey Department and the Geographic Survey Institute. As large-scale maps, 1/20,000 topographic maps, 1/10,000 topographic maps, and 1/25,000 topographic maps are created.
In addition, Yokohama City has created 1/3000 topographic maps and 1/2500 topographic maps as basic data for city planning.
However, there are variations in the timing of creation and the area of creation, and the scale adopted varies depending on the time. Depending on the region, a map of the scale required at the time required may not be created.
Introducing the preparation time and holding status for each map.
Topographic map created by Yokohama City
- A 1/2,500 Topographic Map
- 1/2,500 topographic maps have been created in Kuo, a figure that divides Yokohama city area into 189 from 1971 (Showa 46) to the present.
Since 2006 (Heisei 18), the new map Kuo has been adopted due to the revision of the Survey Law, so please note that the points may differ even if the area name on the map is the same around 2006 (Heisei 18).

- B 1/3,000 Topographic Map
- In Yokohama City, we will start 3,000 detailed topographic map surveying from 1921 (Daisho 10), but it was interrupted by the Great Kanto Earthquake, and the business was resumed in 1925 (Daisho 14). The plan was to cover the Yokohama city area at that time with 53 leaves, referring to the basic materials of urban planning in Europe and the United States.
Before the war, it was created until 1938 (Showa 13), and from 1949 (Showa 24) to 1950 (Showa 25), a topographic map near Kanazawa, which could not be surveyed before the war, was created.
Later, from 1954 (Showa 29) to 1965 (Showa 40), a topographic map was created by aerial photography surveying covering the Yokohama city area at the time with 90 leaves at a new map separation.

Geographical Survey Institute Topographic Map
- A 1/20,000 Topographic Map
- An emergency map was created by local surveying from 1880 (Meiji 13). It is called "quick measurement" or "quick diagram". Initially, it was created in a French style using coloring on the map symbol, but since the entire military system including map production was shifted from the French method to the German method, the "quickly map drawing" was also a single-color printing diagram of the German method. It was rewritten and published. For this reason, there are two types of maps.
After that, based on triangulation and leveling, a 1/20,000 topographic map was created under the name of the official topographic map from 1885 (Meiji 18). It is also called an official figure. It has not been created now.

- B 1/10,000 Topographic Map
- It began to be created in 1893 (Meiji 26), and was initially created only fortress and metropolitan areas.
The creation was canceled in 1960 (Showa 35), but since 1983 (Showa 58), it has been created for major city areas nationwide. Until 1960 (Showa 35), it has the surrounding area of Yokohama City, and has been purchasing all Kokubun since 1988 (Showa 63).

- C 1/25,000 Topographic Map
- Creation was started in 1910 (Meiji 43), but maintenance did not progress and was canceled in 1938 (Showa 13).
The creation was resumed in 1950 (Showa 25), and in 1983 (Showa 58), nationwide maintenance except the four northern islands and Takeshima was completed.
After that, Takeshima was developed in 2007 (Heisei 19) and the northern four islands in 2014 (Heisei 26), and this is a basic map covering the whole country with 4,420 faces. Until 1934 (Showa 9), it has the surrounding area of Yokohama City, and since then it has some created areas. Since 1983 (Showa 58), it has been held nationwide.
