Search for newspaper articles from the late Tokugawa and Meiji eras

 Newspapers are useful for investigating past incidents and events. In particular, from articles from the end of the Tokugawa period and the Meiji era, you can know not only incidents and events, but also the social situation at that time. Yokohama is the birthplace of newspapers, and it is also useful when studying about Yokohama.

 You can check what kind of newspaper was published at that time in the following materials.

 When searching for old newspapers retroactively, it is also necessary to pay attention to the changes in the paper name.

 If you are looking for information about an incident or event, a database that allows you to search for keywords or a book that allows you to hit an article from an index is useful.

(1) Search by database

 The database allows you to search and browse articles comprehensively by keywords. The contents of the recording may be different, so please check before using.

"Asahi Shimbun Cross Search" (available on dedicated terminals in the entire building)
 You can search the Asahi Shimbun from the first issue of Meiji 12 (1879). There is a "history keyword" function that allows you to search without words in the original text.
"Yomidas History Museum" (available on dedicated terminals in the entire building)
 You can search the Yomiuri Shimbun from the first issue of Meiji 7 (1874). The article has its own keywords, so you can search in modern languages.
"Everyone," (available on dedicated terminals in the entire building)
   You can search the Mainichi Shimbun from the first issue of Meiji 5 (1872).

 Based on "Newspaper Articles Collection" (Kobe University Institute of Economic and Management), newspaper articles focusing on commercial economy from the end of the Meiji era to 1945 can be searched and viewed on the Internet.

 It contains a wide range of important articles from more than two hundred and dozens of newspapers. The index is enriched, with the alphabetical order, classification ("politics / economy / administration", "military", etc.), and annual history index at the beginning of each book, item, headline, year, classification There are indexes, commentary, photos, newspapers, magazines, articles, illustrations, advertisements, and materials.

 Here are some means if you want to read newspapers at once, not a specific article.

(1) Read articles from the end of the Tokugawa period

 Newspapers at the end of the Tokugawa period are mainly translated from foreign language newspapers. In the settlements in Yokohama, English newspapers such as "The Japan Herald" and "The Japan Times" were published.
※For translated newspapers, "Japanese translation / publication date" and "date date on which the original paper was published" may differ. First of all, please refer to "Japanese translation and publication date".

 Newspaper articles are included in chronological order, and another volume is indexed. There are also chronological tables and explanations about each newspaper.

 The following two points are summarized for each newspaper published at that time. You can read the text of the article, but there is no original space.

 Newspapers from the Meiji period can be viewed in the following books in addition to (1).

 The book that became the basis of the "News Encyclopedia" introduced in 2. Newspaper articles are included in chronological order. There is no original space.

 The Yokohama Mainichi Shimbun, which was published in Yokohama during the Meiji period, and the Yokohama Trade Newspaper, Trade Shinpo, and Yokohama Trading Shimpo, which are the predecessors of the current Kanagawa Shimbun-sha, are useful for understanding Yokohama during the Meiji period.
