Survey of asbestos-containing spraying materials at school facilities (final report) (FY2005)

Last Updated September 15, 2020

1. Overview of the survey

During the summer vacation, we conducted a fact-finding survey to investigate the use of spraying materials containing asbestos at municipal school facilities. In the survey, the deterioration status of spraying materials and felt materials was checked, and samples were taken and analyzed. As a result of the analysis, if the use of asbestos was found, a scattering volume survey was conducted to check the asbestos scattering status in the air. (Felt material: Asbestos heat insulating material on folding boards)

Overview of the survey
・SurveyIn the survey, we conducted a visual survey of the buildings of each school. We investigated the deterioration of spraying materials, etc., which may contain asbestos, and conducted sampling. The collected samples were analyzed by the Institute for Environmental Science, and the type and content of asbestos were confirmed.
・Scatter volume surveyIf the analysis found that asbestos content was contained, we investigated whether asbestos was scattered in the air in the sampled space. The survey prioritized space in classrooms and corridors used by elementary school student students on a daily basis.

・As a result of a fact-finding survey on the use of spraying materials that may contain asbestos, 324 schools have been confirmed to be "no use" and 196 schools have been confirmed to be "useful".
・As a result of collecting and analyzing samples of 196 schools that have been confirmed to be "useful", 23 schools have found asbestos content.
・The survey results are as per the attached sheet "Usage situation such as municipal school sprayed asbestos and the correspondence situation".

3. Future Responses

For schools where asbestos is found to be used, we will take necessary measures, giving priority to places where elementary school student students and others use daily. In that case, school closures will be considered depending on the work situation. In addition, the results of the survey and the status of response will be announced on our website.
