Japan's first cow spinal cord inhalation removal device (Yokohama Safetyfty)

Last Updated August 1, 2024

People working at the Yokohama Meat Market always hope that the meat they produce will be appreciated by citizens and consumers and will be able to eat with peace of mind.
Under such circumstances, Japan's first BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) occurred in September 2001, and BSE screening tests were started on October 18 of the same year.
In addition to BSE screening tests, double and triple BSE measures were taken during the slaughter solution work. One of them is the removal of the spinal cord of cattle. This is the work of extracting the spinal cord, which is said to be susceptible to abnormal prions, from the spine of all cows in advance at the stage of livestock, regardless of infection, to prevent contact with edible meat.
However, at that time, there were no methods or equipment for how to extract them. Therefore, slaughter and hygienic inspectors, machine personnel, etc. gathered to develop the first domestic cow spinal cord inhalation removal device (Yokohama Safetyfty) (completed in November 2001). The spinal cord removal rate of this device is an epoch-making test that demonstrated almost 100% (actually measured by the Yokohama City Meat Sanitation Laboratory), and has sold 74 units throughout Japan in response to inquiries from other markets.
This device has a strong desire of people working in the market to "want citizens and consumers to eat safe meat with peace of mind."
