The 11th United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, visited Yokohama on his visit to Japan.
Taking this opportunity, a commemorative lecture was held for city council members and city officials on Monday, November 7th. Granddy explained that more than 100 million people have been forced to evacuate around the world, including Ukraine, Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Syria, which is the largest since World War II. He appealed that the government, the private sector, and citizens, would continue to express their thoughts on refugees and continue to provide support from their respective standpoints.
He also introduced the words of Sadako Ogata, the eighth United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, saying, "Japan can become a world power only if it is open to the world and can help more vulnerable countries and people." He stated his words of expectation to the port town of Yokohama, saying, "I think the role is to open rather than closing, and to look outside instead of looking inside."
In March 2022, Yokohama City Council presented the donation to UNHCR as a humanitarian aid to its sister city Odesa and other Ukrainian people.
