What is food loss?

Last Updated September 9, 2024

What is food loss?

Food loss refers to food that can be eaten originally, such as food that was bought in large quantities due to leftovers, bargains, etc., but could not be eaten (untouched food), or something that peeled too much vegetable skin (excessive removal). Food that was discarded.

Why is it necessary to reduce food loss?

Food loss is not just a waste of food.

The resources and energy used in each process, such as the water used in the production of ingredients, the electricity used for processing, and the fuel consumed for delivery, are also wasted. And these resources and energy consumption are one of the causes of global warming. As global warming progresses, rising temperatures and abnormal weather will affect the growth of crops, leading to rising food prices. In this way, food loss will eventually return to our lives.

In addition, according to a survey by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, in Japan, the so-called "food loss" that is still eaten but discarded is about 4.72 million tons per year (estimated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 2022).
This is more than about 4.4 million tons of food aid worldwide.

It is necessary to reduce food loss from the effective use of important resources and consideration of environmental impact.
