What is Food Loss?

Last update date October 19, 2023

What is food loss?

Food loss refers to food that can be eaten, such as leftover food, food that was bought in large quantities due to bargain sale but could not be eaten (untiled food), and foods that have been too thick peeled (excess removal). Food that has been discarded.

Why is it necessary to reduce food loss?

Food loss is not merely wasteful.

Resources and energy used in each process, such as the water used in the production of ingredients, the electricity used for processing, and the fuel consumed for delivery, are also wasted. And these resources and energy consumption are one of the causes of global warming. As global warming progresses, rising temperatures and abnormal weather will affect the growth of crops and lead to higher food prices. In this way, food loss will eventually come back to our lives.

In addition, according to a survey by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the so-called "food loss" that is still eaten in Japan is about 5.23 million tons per year (estimated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (outside site)).
This is much higher than the 4.4 million tons of food aid worldwide.

It is necessary to reduce food loss from effective use of important resources and consideration for environmental impact.

How much food loss is generated in Yokohama City?

The burnable garbage comes from households in Yokohama contains about 87,000 tons of food loss annually.
This is about 23 kilograms per citizen per year.

For example,
Converting 23 kilograms of food loss into rice balls...About 230 pieces
In addition, if we convert 23 kilograms of food loss into food costs....It is calculated that about 18,000 yen per person per year is thrown away. The food cost for 18,000 yen is about 3 weeks of food expenses.

In this way, the problem of food loss involves various "wastefulness".
