About the amount of food loss generated from homes
Last Updated September 5, 2024
Amount of food loss generated in FY2023 (Reiwa 5)
Approximately 50% of the kitchen garbage sent from households are “food loss” due to untouched foods (food that can be discarded untouched), leftovers, and excessive removal (excessive removal of unedible foods such as vegetable skins).
Based on the results of the garbage composition survey in 2023, the amount of food loss from homes was calculated, and it was about 85,000 tons.
Percentage of food loss in burnable garbage
Type of food loss | Amount generated (tons) |
---|---|
Untouched food | Approx. 24,000 |
Leftover food | Approx. 54,000 |
Excessive removal | Approx. 6,000 |
Total | Approx. 85,000 |
※The values in the table are rounded in 1,000 tons. For this reason, the total of each item may not match the amount of food loss generated due to rounding.
