Beware of "unauthorized" waste collection companies!

Last Updated September 27, 2024

-Is the business licensed for the general waste collection and transportation business? ~

There have been complaints and consultations saying, "If you hear the advertisement saying" I will dispose of your household waste free of charge "or if you look at the flyer advertisement and ask for disposal, you will be charged a high fee." .

Examples of trouble

  • We asked a company traveling around the city by light truck to dispose of waste. The collection was free, but a large disposal fee was charged.
  • Attached a flyer for free collection that was in the post and requested garbage disposal. After loading it on a light truck, work fees were collected.
  • Once I asked for free collection, I was in trouble because I visited many times for waste. Etc.

Businesses that collect and transport unnecessary items at homes in Yokohama City as waste must obtain a license from Yokohama City for the general waste collection and transportation business.
Household waste cannot be collected and transported with the permission of industrial waste collection and transportation or the permission of a secondhand dealer.
When requesting waste disposal, do not ask an unauthorized company. In addition, licensed businesses do not collect waste while proclaiming the city with light trucks.
In addition, we display four-digit permission number on collection vehicle and request from Motoichi to publish the same permission number in handbill advertisement to distribute to home.
Person looking for company which received permission, please confirm list of Yokohama-shi municipal solid waste collection transportation business permission supplier.
For information on how to separate and dispose of household garbage, please refer to how to separate and dispose of garbage and resources.

Major collection methods for businesses that collect without permission

Unauthorized collection companies collect waste mainly in the following ways:

(1) Truck-type collection
It is collected while proclaiming the city by light trucks.

(2) Handbill-type collection
"We will collect waste free of charge." Distribute leaflets to the home.
(※)
Yokohama City has requested a licensed municipal waste collection and transportation business to include a "4-digit permission number" in addition to the "business name" on the flyer distributed to homes.

(3) Vacant land type collection
In a vacant lot, "I will collect waste." Set up a signboard with such words and collect it.

Why shouldn't I ask an unauthorized collection company to pick it up for free?

The act of collecting and transporting waste without permission is a violation of the law.
In addition, it is not possible to confirm that products collected by unauthorized collection companies are properly recycled. For example, home appliances contains harmful substances such as CFCs, lead, and arsenic, and therefore requires proper recycling. Such harmful substances are released into the environment when collection companies improperly dispose of waste home appliances without taking environmental measures.

It's a relatively new and fully usable product, so it's a waste to throw it away.

You can also have another person use the product once it has been used as a product again.
When requesting such reuse, ask a second-hand dealer who has the permission of a second-hand dealer, such as a second-hand home appliance retailer.
If you are required to pay the waste disposal fee even though you do not have permission to collect and transport municipal solid waste, please consult with the Resources and Waste Recycling Bureau Business Waste Management Section (045-671-4090).
In Yokohama City, we have concluded agreements with private companies that reuse them, and are promoting the reuse of oversized garbage.
