"What is Preservation and Research Center, City of Yokohama?" (outside site) (YouTube Yokohama City Official Channel "City Of Yokohama")

There are many endangered wildlife in Japan, and these animal species, conservation is needed to preserve biodiversity. For this reason, Preservation and Research Center is actively engaged in the breeding and breeding of rare animals in Japan, including Yokohama.
Specifically, we are conducting research on the ecology of familiar animals, such as the Japanese Night Heron (endangered species) that fly into the city during the breeding season and frogs that live in the city and serve as environmental indicators. In addition, Japanese Rock Ptarmigan, which is an endangered species in Japan, we are also working on breeding under breeding with the goal of establishing populations (Ex situ conservation) and recovering wild populations (In situ conservation).

In addition to raising and breeding of endangered wild animals, we are also contributing to the international community through activities such as returning to the wild and participating in the International conservation Plan. As part of our efforts to breed international species, we raise Malayan Tapir, Bali Myna, and Kagu.

Research on conservation of rare animals

In collaboration with three zoos and universities in Yokohama, we are promoting research for the purpose of conservation.
Specifically, we are working on the following three initiatives.

Knowing the mechanism of breeding

To scientifically analyze the breeding period and establish breeding techniques, we analyze sexual hormones and identify male and female by genes.

Protection of genes

In order to avoid close relatives and prevent genes crossing, we analyze the genes to clarify the variants, between individuals, and between species, and between species.

Genes

To preserve the genetic resources of endangered wildlife in the future, gamete (ovum sperm) and cells are frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen tanks. Using these gametes, we will also conduct research on artificial insemination.
Since March 2014, we have also set up the gamete Bank of Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums to keep the rare animal gamete bred by zoos nationwide.

Research Business Report

We are engaged in public relations and dissemination activities to encourage citizens to feel biodiversity as a familiar issue, using the conservation and breeding of rare animals.
