Preservation and Research Center introduction video

"What kind of place is Preservation and Research Center, City of Yokohama?" (Outside site) (YouTube Yokohama City Official Channel "City Of Yokohama")

There are many endangered wild animals in Japan, and these species of conservation are needed to preserve biodiversity. To this end, Preservation and Research Center is actively engaged in breeding and research of rare animals in Japan, including Yokohama.
Specifically, we are conducting research on the ecology of familiar animals such as the Japanese Night Heron (endangered species) that fly into the city during the breeding season and frogs that live in the city and serve as environmental indicators. We are also working on breeding of Japanese Rock Ptarmigan, an endangered species in Japan, with the goal of establishing a breeding population (Ex situ conservation) and restoring the number of wild animals (In situ conservation).

In addition to raising and breeding international endangered wild animals, we are promoting international contributions such as returning to the wild and participating in the International conservation Project. As an initiative to breed international species under breeding, we breed Malayan Tapir, Bali Myna and Kagu (breed animals).

Research project on rare animals conservation

In collaboration with three zoos and universities in Yokohama, we are promoting research aimed at conservation on biodiversity.
Specifically, we are engaged in the following three initiatives.

Knowing the mechanism of breeding

In order to scientifically analyze breeding physiology and establish breeding techniques, we analyze sex hormones and gene-based male and female.

Protect genes

In order to avoid near-friendship and prevent gene crossing, the genes are analyzed to clarify the relationship between subspecies, between individuals, and between species.

Leave genes

To preserve the genetic resources of endangered wildlife, gamete (ovum sperm) and cells are frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen tanks. Using these gamete, we will also conduct research on artificial insemination.
Since March 2014, the gamete Bank of Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums has also been established to store gamete, a rare animal raised by zoos nationwide.

Research Business Report

Based on the theme of conservation and breeding of rare animals, we are engaged in public relations and dissemination activities to encourage citizens to feel biodiversity as a familiar problem.
