About facility

Preservation and Research Center, City of Yokohama was established on April 24, 1999 on the premises of Yokohama Zoo (outside site) (ZOORASIA). The site area is 3.7ha, and it is located in the "breeding zone", about 1.5 km behind the entrance of Yokohama Zoo. On the premises, there is an animal house that breeds rare wild animals, a research building that conducts various research on wild animals, and a veterinary hospital for treating animals at the Yokohama Zoo.

This center is a facility designed for the purpose of research and research on breeding and breeding rare wild animals and the preservation of species, and is not usually open to the public.
This is the first attempt in the country that such a facility has been created for a zoo.

About protection

In order to preserve endangered wildlife, Preservation and Research Center aims to breed carefully selected animals and maintain them on a succession basis under breeding. Currently, we are working on breeding and breeding rare wild animals such as Malayan Tapir, Bali Myna, Kagu, Walldrapp Ibis, and Congo Peacock.

In addition, in cooperation with the Republic of Indonesia, the country of origin, has also carried out projects such as the return of Bali Myna.
In addition, as a member of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums Biodiversity Committee, we also conduct surveys on the breeding status of Walldrapp Ibis, Bali Myna, and Tapir (Malayan Tapir, South American Tapir, and Baird's Tapir) and formulate plans for Studbook.

As a research facility

At Preservation and Research Center's research facilities, we conduct research on animal variant determination, male and female, gene analysis to examine the relationship between species and individuals, the quantification of sexual hormones related to breeding, and behavioral analysis.
With a view to 100 or 200 years from now, we have begun to freeze and preserve the gamete, genes, and somatic cells.

Preservation and Research Center conducts its own research activities and supports research activities at three zoos in Yokohama (Nogeyama Zoo, Kanazawa Zoo, and Yokohama Zoo).
In addition to Preservation and Research Center staff, staff from zoos and university professors and students from universities conducting joint research activities.
